This position supports the work of the Y, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Assistant Coach – Youth Sports will assist the head coach in teaching the assigned sport, in accordance with agreements with the Livingston Board of Education and the West Essex YMCA. The Assistant Coach ensures the safety of enrolled students, is knowledgeable about coaching middle school students, and promotes high standards of conduct and scholastic achievement among athletes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist in leading engaging and educational practice sessions.
  2. Help instruct groups following YMCA guidelines and game rules.
  3. Model and teach the YMCA’s four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  4. Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and sports officials.
  5. Present a professional appearance and arrive on time for practices and games.
  6. Encourage leadership, initiative, and sound judgment in athletes.
  7. Promote habits of good health and proper training.
  8. Create a positive environment that fosters youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  9. Follow the directions of the head coach and assist as needed.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in teaching or playing sports.
  • Knowledge of sports rules and regulations.
  • CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid certifications.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate instructor skills per YMCA standards.
  • Experience working with diverse populations preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must have sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions, including standing for long periods, walking, using hands, stooping, crouching, and lifting 10-50 pounds.
