Job summary

Babson College is seeking an Assistant Coach in the Athletics department to support the head coach in all aspects of program management, practice planning, and student-athlete development.

The role includes mentoring athletes academically and athletically, assisting in recruitment, and maintaining compliance with NCAA and college policies. Regular travel and campus involvement are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1–3 years coaching experience.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and Concussion recognition training required or obtained within first 3 months.
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training in compliance with OSHA regulations; maintained yearly.
  • Strong communication skills; compliance with NCAA, NEWMAC, and Babson College rules.
  • Commitment to inclusion and working with a diverse student body.

Responsibilities

  • Assist head coach in planning and coaching practice sessions and games.
  • Counsels and mentors student-athletes; monitor academic progress; liaise with deans.
  • Assist in recruitment of student athletes including contacting coaches and planning recruiting trips.
  • Develop and maintain liaison with Health Services, Residential Education, Student Activities and Leadership Programs.
  • Travel with team for games, recruiting, conferences, and tournaments; maintain driving clearance as required by the college.

Job description

Serves as an Assistant Coach within the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Assumes additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the AVP, Athletics and Athletics Advancement or their designee.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Collaborates with the head coach on all aspects of the management and direction of the program in conjunction with the overall strategic plan for Athletics; assumes the duties of the head coach in their absence. Assists in planning and coaching practice sessions and games as directed by the head coach; teaches advanced-level skills and game strategies. Counsels students on general and sport-related matters. Makes student referrals to appropriate student support resources and offices as necessary. Assists in the monitoring of academic progress of student athletes; collaborates with class deans; serves as a mentor to athletes helping to resolve academic and non-academic issues; makes themselves available to coaches and players before, during, and after practices, games, and events. Develops and maintains liaison relationship with Health Services, Residential Education, Student Activities and Leadership Programs, and other appropriate departments to facilitate program development and management for student athletes. Assist the head coach in scouting opponents to help prepare, plan, conduct, and evaluate practice sessions as required. Assist the head coach, as needed, in the recruitment of student athletes including but not limited to contacting high/prep school coaches to identify prospective recruits, planning recruiting trips with the head coach, attending off-campus games to evaluate athletes, and preparing and distributing recruiting information. Assumes additional administrative responsibilities in the department as required by the AVP, Athletics and Athletics Advancement. Assumes additional responsibilities as required

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

Bachelor’s Degree At least 1-3 years of previous coaching experience. Current safety certifications (CPR/First Aid/AED) and Concussion recognition training required or must be obtained within the first three months of employment. Blood Borne Pathogen training in compliance with OSHA regulations; must be maintained yearly throughout time in the position. Must have strong communication skills. Compliance with all NCAA, NEWMAC, and Babson College rules. Contributes to a culture of inclusion and belongingness for all staff members, student-athletes, prospective student-athletes and stakeholders of the department. Commitment to working with a diverse student body, staff, and other constituents. Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; take thoughtful risks; and accept new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results. Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions. Must have strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Regular physical exertion, walking, and exposure to weather are required; Light lifting required (50 pounds and under). Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends, and to travel in person and stay overnight (for one or more nights) for all regular and post-season games, recruiting, conferences, and tournaments as identified and directed by the Head Coach. Must have had a valid unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License for one year, and maintain throughout employment an insurable (as determined by the College’s insurer’s criteria) or a satisfactory driving record; must successfully complete and pass the College’s vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment; annual or more frequent review of employee’s driving record based on the College insurer’s criteria; and safety training as required by management. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), who by virtue of their College responsibilities and under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, is an individual to which students and employees should report criminal offenses. A CSA shall forward all reports in accordance with the College’s reporting structure so they may be assessed for timely warning, inclusion in the daily crime log and inclusion in annual statistical disclosures.

This is an exempt position with the following pay range: $53,813 - $59,792 depending on the candidate’s experience; the role is also eligible for bonuses based on performance and budget. Babson College offers a comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees working at least 28 hours per week. Insurance Coverage: Medical, dental, vision, group life and long-term disability insurance, business travel accident insurance, and mental health benefits. Time Off: Starting at 3 weeks of vacation annually, 2 weeks of sick time, 1 week of paid family illness time, 6 weeks of paid parental leave, and 12 paid holidays per year. President’s holidays are determined each year. Retirement: Participation in a 403(b) retirement plan with mandatory employee contributions and a 4:1 employer match.
