Job summary

Palm Beach State College seeks an Assistant Athletic Coach to support the head coach in managing a competitive intercollegiate team. You will develop relationships with prospective and current student athletes to promote enrollment and academic success while ensuring compliance with college and conference rules.

Key duties include running drills, supervising practices, aiding in recruitment plans, and supporting fundraising efforts to grow a strong athletics program.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in related field; 1+ year athletic coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of FCSAA and NJCAA rules and policies.
  • Proficiency with MS Office or similar applications.
  • Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, and ability to motivate student athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and runs drills, practice games, or training and conditioning exercises.
  • Oversees practices and scheduled contests with head coach; assists in game strategy and lineup decisions.
  • Participates in recruitment planning to identify and enroll student athletes.
  • Supports fundraising and community service initiatives for the athletics program.
  • Promotes academic progress and supports athletes’ educational experiences.
  • Travels to recruitment trips and represents the College at athletic events.

About this role Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, works with the head coach to manage and develop a competitive intercollegiate team. Develops and maintains relationships with potential and current athletes to encourage enrollment and academic success. Ensures that all programs and activities comply with institutional and conference rules and policies.

Varies Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops and runs drills, practice games, or training and conditioning exercises.
  • Works with the head coach to oversee practices and scheduled contests to provide a positive and competitive experience for student athletes; in absence of the head coach the assistant coach assumes full responsibility for the team.
  • Aids in the development of a recruitment plan to identify and enroll student athletes that will create and sustain a successful, competitive athletic program.
  • Supports the head coach and department in developing fundraising and community service opportunities.
  • Fosters the personal development and competitive spirit of the student athletes while supporting their educational experience.
  • Emphasizes and promotes academic progress, resulting in strong academic performance, retention and graduation rates.
  • Attends recruitment trips as needed to recruit student athletes to develop a successful, competitive athletic program.
  • Supervises the team at all off campus competitions.
  • Enforces the rules and regulations of the team, the department, and the College.
  • Provides recommendations to the head coach on team line up's and game strategy.
  • Represents the College and team at all appropriate athletic events (e.g. competitions, conferences, and college sanctioned programs).
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Teaches assigned fundamentals and skills during practice and games.
  • Assesses player’s skills and keeps the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students.
  • Models professional behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Cooperates with the athletic administration in the implementation of department policies.
  • Assists in the direction of the program within the scope of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Associate’s degree in related field of study 1+ year of related athletic coaching experience

Knowledge of: Policies, rules, and regulations of the FCSAA and NJCAA

Microsoft Office Professional or similar application

Skill in: Developing and motivating student athletes academically and athletically

Strong leadership

Verbal and written communication

Problem/situation analysis

Effective task management

Ability to: Travel and recruit student athletes

Maintain effective working relationships.

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR/AED certification
Preferred Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree Collegiate coaching experience

Work Environment and Physical Demand:
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing 20 to 49 pounds.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, install or remove objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Reach and grasp objects.
  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
