Position Summary

Walsh University is a member of NCAA Division II that competes in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Assistant Coach – Casual is responsible for assisting the coaching staff in coaching/mentoring student‑athletes technically and tactically on the field/court/etc., as well as guiding them through academic achievement and personal development. The assistant coach (casual) is also responsible for helping with recruiting and retaining student‑athletes and managing the day‑to‑day practice regimen. The Assistant Coach (casual) reports to the Head Coach of the sport assigned and/or other designated coach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coaching/mentoring

• Assists the head coach to communicate goals, expectations, and accountability to help maintain high standard of performance, ethics, and sportsmanship on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
• Creates a relationship built on sincere interest in each student‑athlete’s academic, athletic, and personal pursuits.
• Collaborates with other college staff when/if necessary.
• Assists with the process to plan, organise, and facilitate individual and team training and competition.
• Studies and implements strategy and skills needed to prepare for competition.
• Learns, knows, and abides by NCAA Division II rules and regulations.
• Leads in a way that positively reflects the mission and vision of the institution.
• Adheres to rules, guidelines and principles set forth by the applicable division/conference.
• Assists the head coach and staff to plan, communicate, create, and model the same expectations as the head coach.

Recruiting

• Assists in developing a strategic plan to identify and evaluate talent that would be a good fit for Walsh University.
• Creates relationships with prospective student‑athletes, their families, clubs, and high school coaches.
• Assists in building and maintaining prospect databases through recruiting events and camps/clinics.
• Organises and works collaboratively with admissions to bring quality student‑athletes on campus in partnership with the coaching staff.
• Reaches/Manages enrollment numbers as assigned.

Other duties

• Establishes and maintains an alumni relationship.
• Is creative and willing to fundraise to support the operating budget.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Master’s Degree preferred/encouraged.

Work Experience

• At least 1–3 year’s coaching experience at the collegiate level or other significant experience relative to coaching and/or the administration of an intercollegiate athletics program.

Skills and Abilities

• Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity toward students, staff, and faculty. Positive attitude a must.
• First Aid, CPR, AED certification required.
