Job description

Join to apply for the Assistant Civil Engineer role at City of New York.

NYC DOT is responsible for maintaining more than 20,000 lane miles of city streets. The Technical Services, Innovations and Quality Control Unit manages quality assurance & control of asphalt production and construction within the division of Roadway Repair and Maintenance (RRM). The selected candidate will assist project managers and engineers in field assessments of asphalt pavement complexities, such as substandard roadway grades, deterioration of roadway assets, and asphalt material deficiencies, supporting the determination or design of repair solutions. Responsibilities include traveling across all boroughs, conducting topographical surveys, identifying construction constraints, and designing roadway compositions, measurements, and grades. The candidate will collaborate with external parties, such as other units, divisions, city agencies, and contractors, via email, phone, meetings, and online platforms. Additionally, the role involves managing and updating internal databases tracking localized street ponding cases.

The candidate will assist in managing RRM’s Materials Testing Contract, oversee RRM’s Asphalt Quality Control laboratories, and review technical specifications for construction and procurement contracts related to asphalt. They will also support research and development of emerging asphalt technologies through construction testing pilots and may attend relevant training sessions. Willingness to travel for outdoor inspections in all weather conditions and work overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering and one year of civil engineering experience, or

Preferred Skills: Proficiency in roadway design, topographical surveys, asphalt production/construction, technical writing; valid NY driver’s license; willingness to travel and work in outdoor conditions and irregular hours.
