Job summary

The City of Charlottesville is seeking an Assistant City Engineer to perform complex professional work in review and approval of building projects, development plans, cost estimates, CIP, and construction management. You will oversee roads, bridges, stormwater, and right-of-way, with broad discretion and report to the City Engineer.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and 3 years of experience in professional engineering or land development.
• Alternate: Associate degree and 5 years of experience with equivalent qualifications.
• Equivalents considered; PE/EIT licenses preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review and approve plans for zoning compliance, inspect projects, and resolve issues with customers.
• Administer PROW program for private utilities including permits, plans, and construction administration.
• Oversee NDP: review projects, site visits, document prep, financing, and construction oversight.
• Provide guidance on budgets, design standards, and compliance with laws and regulations.
• Supervise engineers, assist in staff development and performance reviews.
