The City Attorney's Office seeks an accomplished municipal attorney responsible for prosecuting criminal and civil cases, providing legal counsel, and representing the City of Casper. Ideal candidates have a Juris Doctorate and at least three years in municipal law, demonstrating strong negotiation, public speaking, and legal research skills. This role will include direct interactions with court systems and various city departments, ensuring both legal compliance and effective governance.
1. Prosecutes criminal, civil, and administrative cases involving violations of City ordinances and Codes; and provides legal counsel in the defense of City actions, which includes: making opening statements; arguing preliminary motions; examining witnesses; introducing evidence; making arguments regarding the evidence and the law; and making sentencing recommendations.
2. Prepares cases for trial, which includes negotiating plea agreements; interviewing witnesses; reviewing physical evidence; and developing trial strategy.
3. Assesses legal risks and negotiates, drafts, and/or reviews legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, contracts, bond issues, deeds, and leases that protect the City’s interest and resolve issues.
4. Evaluates and signs criminal arrest affidavits.
5. Reviews relevant case law, statutes, and ordinances and identifies possible impact on the City; keeps abreast of changes in the legal environment, and updates the Casper Police Department with changes to law that may have a significant impact on cases.
6. Coordinates departmental activities and priorities with other City departments and external agencies; attends meetings to receive and convey information
7. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
8. Appeals cases as necessary to higher court.
9. May handle limited civil legal questions and projects.
10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
