Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Buildings seeks an Inspector (Construction) to lead a unit responsible for inspecting buildings, alterations, and construction to ensure compliance with NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution.

You will supervise field inspectors, coordinate with divisions and agencies, testify when required, maintain records and reports, and help improve processes while representing the department professionally. Remote work is noted in the posting.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in construction trades or related field; or
• License as a professional engineer or registered architect; or
• Sixty college credits towards relevant degree; or
• One year experience plus one year formal construction training; or
• Completion of a construction trade/apprentice program; or
• Education/experience equivalent to above; or
• For Assignment II: three extra years of experience or a related bachelor's with one year experience; or
• For Assignment III: one more year of experience after II; or
• For Assignment IV: one more year of supervisory experience after III

Responsibilities

• Assist in managing a unit for efficient inspection work; supervise subordinates; provide leadership and development.
• Directly supervise a team of Supervising Inspectors and field inspectors.
• Inform senior staff of problems needing intervention.
• Meet with inspectors regularly to discuss duties and policies.
• Meet unit personnel monthly to review concerns and operations.
• Deploy personnel to maximize efficiency and service to the public.
• Explain and enforce relevant laws and rules; testify as needed in ECB or court.

Education

Two years construction experience

Professional engineer or architect license

Sixty college credits

One year training in construction program

Apprentice program completion

Equivalent education/experience

Assignment II eligibility requirement
