Job summary

University of Southern Indiana is seeking an Assistant Cheer Coach to support the intercollegiate cheer program under the Division of President's Office in Athletics.

The role involves coaching, recruiting, compliance with NCAA/OVC/UCA rules, and collaboration with athletic training and academic support to help student‑athletes succeed on and off the field.

Qualifications

  • Fundraising experience required.
  • Familiarity with OVC, UCA and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, internet, word processing, spreadsheets, databases and email software.
  • Excellent verbal, written, organizational, management and administrative skills.
  • Positive communication, marketing and public relation skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with student‑athletes, faculty, alumni and administrative staff.

Position Summary

Responsible for assisting the Head Coach in the management and administration of the cheer intercollegiate sports program.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Coach practice sessions and workouts. Assist with coaching responsibilities during athletic events.
  • Attend coaches’ preparatory meetings and implements strategies resulting from these meetings.
  • Develop a comprehensive and functional knowledge of the sport and maintain thorough and continual familiarity with all applicable University, OVC, UCA and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Scout and recruit quality student‑athletes and coordinate recruiting activities with the Head Coach.
  • Secure practice times and facilities.
  • Assist in the implementation of the academic program, including the monitoring of individual student‑athlete progress to ensure academic eligibility, the enforcement of study and tutorial programs, and the referral to appropriate University academic resource personnel.
  • Work with student‑athletes and monitors adherence to rules and regulations for conduct, appearance and behavior.
  • Work closely with athletic training staff to provide for the safety and health of student‑athletes.
  • Serve in a public relations function through the University.
  • Participate in the University’s public relations activities, including print, television and radio interviews, and news conferences.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude toward all sports sponsored by the intercollegiate athletics program.
  • Implement fundraising programs to assist growth of the team’s budget.
  • Participate in annual continuing education as required by the NCAA, Conference and/or Institution is required.
  • Adhering to all NCAA, Conference, and Institutional rules and regulations is required at all times. All violations must be reported to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Director of Compliance or their designee immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Fundraising experience required.
  • Familiarity with OVC, UCA and NCAA rules and regulations.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Prior coaching experience preferred.
  • Related playing, coaching and athletics administration experience preferred.
Functional Requirements
  • Extensive physical activity at athletic events and practices to oversee activities and to interact with athletes, administration, officials and attendees.
  • Remaining in a stationary position at a desk or workstation for extended periods of time for a number of assigned duties.
  • Ability to use computers and computer systems (hardware and software) to enter data, to retrieve and process information and to create documents.
  • Ability to retrieve information from written documents and from computer‑generated reports.
  • Frequent physical access to meeting rooms and events throughout campus, as well as to local, regional and national venues.
  • Positive interaction at all times with students, athletes, and athletic event officials and attendees.
  • The presentation of a consistently professional demeanor at all times, even in difficult, negative or frustrating situations.
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
  • Hours worked will not exceed 28 hours per week.
  • Attendance is required at all practices. Times and dates may change throughout the season.
  • Frequent irregular hours including evenings and weekends required.
  • Required travel includes but is not limited to camps, competitions and tournaments.
