Job summary

The Washington Nationals are seeking an Assistant, Baseball Operations to join our team. The role combines ownership of payroll administration, contracts, and roster items with supporting a broad set of Baseball Operations workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage the administration of player payroll, including establishing payroll procedures and policies, ensuring compliance with MLB and organizational requirements, and exercising discretion in recommending payroll modifications.
  • Manage the various contracts and agreements associated with baseball operations‑related vendors.
  • Coordinate and support day‑to‑day operations related to management of the 40‑Man Roster and compliance with MLB rules, including interpreting and applying complex MLB rules to operational decisions.
  • Direct and execute administrative processes related to the execution of player transactions and Major League contracts.
  • Play a meaningful role in the salary arbitration process, from initial research performing comparative and market analysis, to formulating negotiation strategy, handling negotiations with player agents, and representing organizational interests in arbitration proceedings, requiring advanced analytical and legal reasoning.
  • Co‑manage the Baseball Operations Internship program, including developing and implementing recruitment strategies, establishing program policies and procedures, participating in decisions regarding intern selection and placement, and evaluating program effectiveness to make recommendations for program improvements.
  • Lead special projects and cross functional initiatives as assigned, conducting independent strategic and financial analysis, formulating recommendations for organizational improvement, working collaboratively with the Senior Director and Chief of Staff to achieve departmental strategic objectives.
  • Perform other administrative or business operations duties as assigned by Senior Director and Chief of Staff, exercising discretion and independent judgment consistent with the nature of assigned duties.

Position Summary

The Assistant, Baseball Operations will serve as a key operational and strategic resource to the Baseball Operations department of the Washington Nationals. The role combines ownership of critical recurring processes including direction and administration of player payroll, contracts, and roster-related items, in addition to supporting a wide-ranging set of workflows that touch all aspects of Baseball Operations. Depending on organizational priorities, the individual may direct or contribute to projects spanning acquisitions, player development, R&D, and cross‑departmental strategic initiatives, while also supporting the Chief of Staff with key departmental objectives.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this role is $65,000-$75,000. Actual pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to the applicant’s: qualifications, skills, expertise, education/training, certifications, and other organization requirements. Starting salaries for new employees are frequently not at the top of the applicable salary range.
