Job summary

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is seeking an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Bureau to represent the State in state and federal courts, handling high-impact civil matters and potential appellate work.

This role offers meaningful responsibility, collaboration with attorneys across the DOJ, and opportunities to shape public policy while upholding the rule of law.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Nebraska, or clear ability to be licensed in Nebraska by motion.
• Minimum of three years of litigation experience in a private law firm or government agency, which may include service as a judicial law clerk.
• Litigation experience must include motion practice, depositions, and state or federal court hearings.
• Excellent legal writing skills and strong professional judgment.
• Demonstrated work ethic, initiative, and commitment to public service.

Responsibilities

• Serve as trial counsel for the State of Nebraska in civil litigation matters in state and federal district courts, with potential appellate involvement.
• Handle complex litigation from initiation through resolution, including investigation, discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, and trial.
• Draft persuasive pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda on significant legal and constitutional issues.
• Provide strategic legal counsel to state agencies, officials, and employees on matters of statewide importance.
• Work in a highly collaborative environment with attorneys across the Department of Justice, including opportunities to partner with the Consumer Protection Bureau, Solicitor General’s Office, Criminal Bureau, and Legal Services Bureau on complex, high-profile matters.
