Job summary

Tabor Academy seeks an Assistant Athletic Trainer and Concussion Coordinator to support afternoon athletic programming across all seasons. The Athletic Trainer serves as a key member of the Sports Medicine Staff and works collaboratively with coaches, health professionals, faculty, families, and students to promote the health and well‑being of student‑athletes in a boarding school environment. This position reports to the Athletic Director and works closely with all other members of the Athletics Department. This is an academic‑year position following the school calendar.

Key Responsibilities
  • Staff the Athletic Training Room during practices and interscholastic competitions as scheduled and assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer
  • Assess, evaluate, treat, and manage sports-related injuries for student‑athletes
  • Act as the lead Athletic Training staff member in the implantation and management of concussion protocols, including baseline testing, evaluation, return-to-learn, and return-to-play procedures in accordance with school policies and state regulations
  • Respond to and manage emergent situations and catastrophic athletic injuries
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and progress individualized rehabilitation programs
  • Apply protective and preventive taping, bracing, and assistive devices as needed
  • Travel with athletic teams as necessary, including varsity football and postseason competitions
  • Collaborate professionally with Athletic Training staff, school physicians, coaches, faculty, and healthcare providers
  • Communicate effectively with student‑athletes, families, coaches, faculty, and healthcare personnel regarding injury care, concussion management, and treatment plans while maintaining confidentiality
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of injury evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation progress, concussion protocols, and reports
  • Utilize electronic medical records, concussion management systems, mobile devices, MS Office, Teams, and other related software systems
  • Demonstrate organization, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently
  • Support a positive and inclusive environment through culturally competent practices and effective work with diverse populations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director in collaboration with the Head Athletic Trainer
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or a relevant field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • NATA-BOC certification required
  • Massachusetts Athletic Trainer license and NPI number required or ability to obtain prior to hire
  • Emergency Cardiac Care certification
Required Skills And Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to certified and licensed athletic training, including concussion management requirements
  • Ability to think critically and make independent clinical decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, concussion management, and return-to-play protocols
  • Knowledge of concussion assessment tools, return-to-learn protocols, and return-to-play best practices
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record systems, concussion management software, email, Microsoft Office, Teams, and mobile technology
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, faculty, coaches, and healthcare professionals
  • Ability to work effectively and empathetically with adolescents
  • Flexibility to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, and travel as required by athletic schedules

  • Experience working in an independent school, boarding school, or educational athletic environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing concussion protocols in a secondary school or collegiate athletic setting
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and perspectives
  • Experience managing rehabilitation programs for high school-aged student‑athletes
  • Ability to foster positive relationships within a collaborative team environment
  • Strong problem‑solving and crisis‑management abilities
  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, enthusiasm, and optimism in supporting students and colleagues

Work Schedule: This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week) with a schedule that varies based on the needs of the athletics department. Flexibility to work evenings/weekends is required. This is an academic‑year position following the school calendar.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout athletic facilities and fields for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations and provide immediate care to injured athletes
  • Ability to lift and carry, up to 80 pounds, including but not limited to athletic training equipment and assist injured athletes as needed
  • Ability to work outdoors in all elements and travel with athletic teams as required
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during athletic seasons
