Job description

The Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW), a nonpartisan research and policy institute within the McCourt School of Public Policy, seeks a new Assistant/Associate Research Professor. Founded in 2008, CEW generates accessible, independent research that (1) examines the evolving connections between education and careers; (2) identifies disparities in educational and economic outcomes that disadvantage underserved populations; and (3) strengthens education, training, and workforce systems to prepare people for the labor market and deliver equitable opportunity for all.

This position will have primary responsibility for designing and executing applied research projects focused on education, labor markets, and economic mobility. The position is intended for an individual with advanced quantitative research training who can lead applied research projects from conceptualization through dissemination.

The Assistant/Associate Research Professor will contribute substantively to the Center’s research agenda and work closely with the Center Director and other senior staff to develop and manage projects examining the connections between education, credentials, skills, occupations, labor market demand, and economic opportunity. The position requires the ability to manage cross-disciplinary project teams, independently develop research questions, design empirical research strategies, conduct rigorous quantitative analyses using survey and administrative microdata, and communicate findings clearly to diverse audiences.

This is a fully remote, non-tenure-track position. The salary range for this position is $120,000–$140,000.

Qualifications

Required

• PhD in economics, public policy, sociology, education policy, or a related quantitative social science field; OR a Master’s degree in a related field with substantial applied research experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in workforce policy, labor economics, education policy, or related areas.
• Experience leading and managing complex research projects from start to finish.
• Expert quantitative research and econometric skills.
• Expert programming skills in at least one statistical programming language (e.g., Python, R, Stata, or SAS).
• Experience working with large-scale education and workforce datasets, such as the:
  • American Community Survey (ACS)
  • Current Population Survey (CPS)
  • Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY)
  • High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09)
  • National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to communicate technical findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in highly collaborative environments.

Preferred

• Research experience related to labor markets, workforce development, career pathways, and economic mobility in an applied or policy research settingsuch as a policy research institute, think tank, or university research center.
• Experience developing grant proposals or contributing to externally funded research initiatives.
• Experience working with administrative microdata, such as state wage records, and real-time job postings.
• Experience developing data tools, dashboards, and other visualizations
• Familiarity with forecasting and simulation methodologies.
• Experience mentoring junior staff.
• Experience with media interviews and public speaking.
• Record of policy-relevant publications, reports, or scholarly research.
