The Division of Classical Hematology, in the Department of Medicine, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is seeking an exceptional candidate who is focused on a full-time academic practice in classical hematology. The position involves outpatient and inpatient care at UPMC involving a portfolio focused on classical hematology, including consultation on complex hemostasis and thrombosis cases in the setting of advanced surgeries, organ transplantation, and high-risk maternal fetal medicine. Areas of academic interest that fit particularly well with the current priorities of our division include, but are not limited to, thrombosis and malignancy, sickle cell and hemoglobinopathies, bleeding and thrombosis in women, and platelet disorders with a focus on inherited bleeding disorders. Candidates in this division with interests in research would have access to an established and high-impact Pittsburgh Heart, Lung, and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute (led by Dr. Stephen Y. Chan MD, PhD). This institute offers an unparalleled environment for hematologists seeking to advance patient care, basic, translational, and clinical science, and innovation at the intersection of hematology, thrombosis, vascular biology, and cardiovascular medicine. Physicians would have opportunities to participate in groundbreaking translational research, investigator-initiated clinical trials, and multi-disciplinary programs focused on thrombosis, hemostasis, sickle cell disease, pulmonary hypertension, cardio-oncology, and vascular complications of cancer and cancer therapies (together with UPMC Hillman Cancer, led by Dr. John C. Byrd, MD a practicing hematologist). The Division of Classical Hematology along with the Division of Hematology-Oncology has a combined fellowship program with a strong record of training fellows who have gone on to full-time academic positions, as well as leadership positions in Biotechnology companies. Clinical activities will include attending the inpatient hematology consultation service, the outpatient non-malignant hematology clinic at UPMC, and the federally funded Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, which has access to multiple clinical resources as well as a vast array of diagnostic tools & cutting-edge laboratory studies. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with level of experience.
