Job description

Small Animal Surgery - Orthopedics and Soft Tissue

Positions may be full or part-time, tenure or clinical track, and at any level (assistant, associate, or full professor).

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking surgeons (orthopedic or soft tissue). The department and hospital are dedicated to supporting the successful candidate in professional development and subspecialization as desired. The small animal hospital has state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment abilities including a new 3T MRI, a 264 slice CT to be installed at the end of 2022, cone beam CT, intraoperative fluoroscopy, arthroscopy including a nanoscope, multidirectional table for advanced thoracoscopy and laparoscopy procedures, and cardiopulmonary bypass equipment. Strong collaborative relationships exist between surgery and other sections in both research and clinical settings to provide the best patient care possible. There are also strong collaborations with the Medical School and physicians may aid in adapting human procedures to animals or collaborating in research.

For those with strong research interests, there are grant writing workshops, support in handling the press, and feedback on internal grants. For clinical research, there is a Clinical Investigation Center that performs clinical trials as designed by an investigator including those that require Good Clinical Practice designation. There are many collaboration opportunities with the colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

Teaching is supported with training, computer support, and aids with materials. There are multiple resources for educational scholarship and teaching aids. The Center for Educational Innovation can aid in helping an instructor integrate the best practices for education students.

Primary Duties:

  1. Participation in the teaching, research, and clinical care in the surgery service of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC; www.cvm.umn.edu/vmc).
  2. Teaching fourth-year students, interns, and residents assigned to clinical rotations.
  3. Participation in the didactic teaching of students in the DVM curriculum.
  4. Participation in training programs for surgery residents.
  5. Provision of surgical consultations to faculty, residents, interns, and community veterinarians.
  6. Participation in clinical teaching laboratories.
  7. Provision of continuing education to practicing veterinarians.
  8. Participation in ongoing clinical research programs.
  9. Providing timely written follow-up communication to referring veterinarians.
  10. Participation in after-hours services.

The candidate and department negotiate the percentage of time spent in teaching, research, and clinical service.

Career Development:
At the University of Minnesota and within the College of Veterinary Medicine, career and professional development opportunities are exceptional and include mentorship programs, promotional pathways, and continuing professional education funding and dedicated time (10 days/year) to take advantage of our resources to advance and expand your career.

Work-Life Balance:
The College is committed to supporting professional development while encouraging work-life balance. The following are examples of this commitment in the surgery service:
• Time spent off the clinic floor is flexible. Working from home is facilitated by many meetings being on Zoom or hybrid.
• Faculty involvement in clinical cases while off clinics is rare and typically voluntary (i.e. clinical case crosses over with a clinical trial).
• Faculty do not provide any primary emergency duty, but provide backup to the residents.
• The UMN has floating holidays often incorporated near Christmas and New Year, commonly creating 4-day weekends. The hospital decreases caseload between Christmas and New Year to urgent and emergent cases allowing more faculty and staff time off during the holidays.
• Faculty are allowed to bring dogs to their offices which decreases stress levels.

You may also be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. For more information about this program, go to Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The University of Minnesota provides a great benefits package covering medical and dental coverage, basic life insurance, sick leave, 22 days vacation, faculty retirement plan (The University contributes 10% of the individual’s salary), and an academic disability program. Additional benefits include wellness program, health care and dependent daycare flexible spending accounts, disability coverage, tuition benefits, and voluntary retirement plans.
