An established industry player in medical education is seeking an experienced surgical pathologist to lead its surgical pathology department. This role offers a unique opportunity to innovate within a growing team of pathologists and contribute to the integration of digital pathology. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and emotional intelligence, with a commitment to mentoring and professional development. You'll be supported by a robust department dedicated to career growth, and enjoy a stable environment with excellent retention practices. If you're ready to make a significant clinical impact and influence policy, this position is for you.
Due to a promotion, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in conjunction with IU Health Physicians (IUHP), are recruiting an experienced surgical pathologist to fulfill the role of director of surgical pathology.
In January of 2024, the department moved surgical pathology to a subspecialized model of practice. Currently, anatomic pathology is comprised of 58 pathologists, 38 of whom practice in the surgical pathology subspecialty model. Seven subspecialty section heads report directly to the director of surgical pathology. Additional directors of histology/gross laboratories and immunohistochemistry are also present to support the anatomic pathology operations.
The individual selected will be based at the IU Health Central Pathology Laboratory (IUHPL). The department is comprised of 83 faculty members between AP and CP, with a plan for continued expansion. A team of ten certified pathologists' assistants and two grossing technicians serve as support to the anatomic pathology faculty. The ability to recruit and attract top talent to the growing department has been strong over the past 18 months. The ideal candidate will be arriving at a freshly renovated histology and immunohistochemistry laboratories designed to accommodate the integration of digital pathology into the practice. These factors afford our new director of surgical pathology the rare opportunity to build and innovate.
The department is a strong proponent of career development and professional growth in role. As a result, this position will have strong mentoring support from the chair and vice chairs in the department. The chosen incumbent will be offered the ability to select a department funded leadership coach that is external to the institution. This coach will provide professional development, mentoring, and will serve as an independent aid in learning and development. In addition, this position has the benefit of an endowed professorship to support their work in the tripartite mission.
