Description

Position Summary

Due to a promotion, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine ( IUSM ) in conjunction with IU Health Medical Group ( IUHMG ), are recruiting an experienced surgical pathologist to fulfill the role of director of surgical pathology.

In January of 2024, the department moved surgical pathology to a subspecialized model of practice. Currently, anatomic pathology is comprised of 58 pathologists, 38 of whom practice in the surgical pathology subspecialty model. Seven subspecialty section heads report directly to the director of surgical pathology. Additional directors of histology/gross laboratories and immunohistochemistry are also present to support the anatomic pathology operations.

The individual selected will be based at the IU Health Central Pathology Laboratory ( IUHPL ). The department is comprised of 83 faculty members between AP and CP, with a plan for continued expansion. A team of ten certified pathologists' assistants and two grossing technicians serve as support to the anatomic pathology faculty. The ability to recruit and attract top talent to the growing department has been strong over the past 18 months. The ideal candidate will be arriving at a freshly renovated histology and immunohistochemistry laboratories designed to accommodate the integration of digital pathology into the practice. These factors afford our new director of surgical pathology the rare opportunity to build and innovate.

The department is a strong proponent of career development and professional growth in role. As a result, this position will have strong mentoring support from the chair and vice chairs in the department. The chosen incumbent will be offered the ability to select a department funded leadership coach that is external to the institution. This coach will provide professional development, mentoring, and will serve as an independent aid in learning and development. In addition, this position has the benefit of an endowed professorship to support their work in the tripartite mission.

Responsibilities:

• Set strategy and policy for surgical pathology for the health system

• Invite change and implement new technologies and practices in the department

• Clearly communicate expectations and changes to surgical pathology faculty

• Work with IU Health leadership to plan for the capital purchases and investments required to implement digital pathology

• Oversee a surgical pathology sign-out service of 38 surgical pathology faculty; collaborate with the six anatomic pathology division directors and two laboratory directors

• Develop and mentor the seven subspeciality section heads in surgical pathology

• Provide direction of surgical pathology services within the 16 hospital IU Health System

• Teach medical students, residents, and fellows

• Strong support for translational researchand clinical research activities should the successful candidate wish to pursue excellence in a subspecialty area of interest

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate or terminal degree is required. The applicant must be certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Experience with quality assurance, inspection, and accreditation processes, as well as employee relations and scheduling experience is required. Applicants must be qualified for licensure in the state of Indiana.
