Job summary

Office of Cuba Broadcasting is seeking an Assignments Editor (Spanish) to manage news and feature material for radio, TV, and online platforms. You will review sources, edit final reports, and coordinate assignments with staff and freelancers to meet deadlines.

Duties

As an Assignments Editor (Spanish), you will be responsible for duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviews a wide variety of news sources and stays constantly abreast of news events, developments and trends to have a thorough understanding of what coverage Office of Cuba Broadcasting needs to produce.
  • Works closely with news editors to discuss main and regional news line-ups and how stories on them may need additional beyond simple text coverage. Reviews, edits, and approves final text and audiovisual news reports.
  • Makes general assignments, based on news events/developments, content of interest to audience and taking into account deadlines.
  • Assigns coverage to correspondents, staff reporters and freelancers, determines day-to-day coverage assignments, based on news, issues, trends, developments and programming needs and mindful of program deadlines.
Requirements
Conditions of employment
  • You must be a U.S Citizen or U.S. National.
  • This is a national security position. If selected, this position requires the completion of the SF-86.
  • Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a background investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The background investigation may include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.
  • This position is not covered by a Union Agreement.
  • This position has been designated supervisory requiring that the selectee serve on an initial appointment as a supervisor or manager serve a one-year probationary period.
  • The full performance grade level for this position is GS-13
  • If you are a male applicant who is born after 12/31/59, you are required to be registered for the Selective Service.
  • This position may require working nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications

Applicant must be eligible for an Excepted Service appointment under Schedule B, 213.3228. This appointment authority requires that the selectee have extensive knowledge of Cuba, including its people, culture, history, politics, economics, and current events. This extensive knowledge MUST be clearly articulated in your resume to receive consideration.

Screen out factor

Applicant must have fluency in both English and Spanish languages that enables you to speak, read, write, report, and translate in both languages. This language screen out factor MUST be listed in your resume to receive consideration.

Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the GS-12 or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized Experience is experience, which is clearly documented in the resume and application, and which demonstrates that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and includes all of the following:

  • Assigns and coordinates news and feature material and content elements for radio, TV and the internet based on news events and developments.
  • Produces balanced, accurate, comprehensive material, selects news stories, and conducts interviews with various types of organizations and/or leaders of Spanish and English-speaking countries.
  • Journalism, reporting and/or editorial experience that demonstrates a knowledge of Cuba its history, economics, culture, socio-political development, and the full range of journalistic skills to select materials, tone, and style that will be most appealing to this audience.
Education

Education is not required for this grade level. It cannot be used for qualification purposes.
