AMERI-CANS is seeking an Assembly & Repair Technician in Ruther Glen, VA. This full-time, hands-on role involves assembling and outfitting temporary sanitary pumphouse systems and refurbishing equipment used in field deployments.

You will be part of a 7-person shop crew, rotating across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and finishing tasks to meet project needs and schedules. Required 2–3 years of multi-trade experience, strong tool proficiency, and a collaborative, dependable work

Qualifications

  • 2–3 years hands-on experience across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical repair, or painting/finishing.
  • Experience using common hand and power tools such as framing nailers, mitre and table saws, pipe cutting and joining tools, crimpers, drills, impact drivers, grinders, and multimeters.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical ability with the capacity to understand how components interact as part of a complete system.
  • Ability to identify mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and structural problems and work through practical repair solutions.
  • Ability to read and follow shop drawings, assembly schematics, dimensional cut sheets, equipment specifications, and diagnostic checklists.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented approach, with the ability to work closely alongside other crew members across multiple trades and tasks.

Position Overview

The Assembly & Repair Technician is responsible for the assembly, trade outfitting, repair, and refurbishment of temporary sanitary pumphouse systems and other company equipment. This hands-on, multi-trade role involves assembling and outfitting new systems as well as systematically rehabilitating legacy systems and rental equipment returning from field deployment.

Working as part of a 7-person shop crew, the successful candidate must be a flexible team player capable of performing work across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and finishing disciplines. Technicians will rotate between tasks based on current project needs, equipment condition, and turnaround schedules.

Key Responsibilities

1. New System Assembly & Outfitting

  • Carpentry & Framing: Build and reinforce subflooring, wall framing, interior partitions, and exterior sheathing using standard construction methods and power tools.
  • Plumbing & Pipefitting: Route, cut, glue, and fit rigid and flexible piping, including PVC, PEX, ABS, and copper, for intake, discharge, manifolds, and pump connections; install tanks, valves, strainers, and related components.
  • Electrical Rough-In & Outfitting: Install electrical panels, conduit, outlets, lighting, space heaters, and control wiring for pumps and related systems according to established shop layouts and applicable safety requirements.
  • Finishing & Painting: Prepare surfaces, seal and caulk seams, prime, and apply protective interior and exterior coatings using brushes, rollers, and commercial spray equipment.
  • Assemble, install, and secure mechanical components and supporting hardware according to established system layouts, specifications, and dimensional requirements.

2. Repair, Rehabilitation & Refurbishment

  • Conduct comprehensive intake inspections of legacy systems and equipment returning from field deployment to identify and document damage, wear, deterioration, and mechanical or electrical issues.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, or replace damaged or worn components, including framing, piping, pumps, valves, switches, electrical components, and hardware.
  • Perform structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and cosmetic repairs necessary to restore equipment to serviceable condition.
  • Pressure-test fluid lines and conduct functional mechanical and electrical testing to verify proper system operation before equipment is cleared for redeployment.
  • Pressure-wash, clean, sanitize, prepare, and repaint systems and enclosures as necessary to restore equipment condition and maintain consistent fleet presentation.
  • Assist with modifications and upgrades to existing systems when operational requirements, field experience, or equipment condition warrant changes.

3. Shop Operations & Team Execution

  • Coordinate daily work and task handoffs with fellow crew members across structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and finishing activities to maintain efficient workflow and project schedules.
  • Maintain shared shop tools and equipment and ensure tools are returned to designated storage locations in serviceable condition.
  • Organize and maintain commonly used materials and consumables, including fittings, fasteners, piping, wire, hardware, and finishing supplies.
  • Notify management of damaged tools, material shortages, or inventory needs that could affect scheduled work.
  • Maintain clean and orderly personal work areas and shared shop spaces.
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures, PPE requirements, equipment operating procedures, and housekeeping standards.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and movement of systems, materials, and components within the shop and yard as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Multi-Trade Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of hands‑on experience involving at least two relevant trades or disciplines, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical repair, or painting/finishing, with the willingness and aptitude to cross‑train in additional areas.
  • Tool Proficiency: Demonstrated experience using common commercial hand and power tools, which may include framing nailers, miter and table saws, pipe cutting and joining tools, crimpers, drills, impact drivers, grinders, and multimeters.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong hands‑on mechanical ability with the capacity to understand how individual components interact as part of a complete system.
  • Troubleshooting Ability: Ability to identify mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and structural problems and work through practical repair solutions.
  • Technical Comprehension: Ability to read and follow shop drawings, assembly schematics, dimensional cut sheets, equipment specifications, and diagnostic checklists.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Strong interpersonal skills and a team‑oriented approach, with the ability to work closely alongside other crew members across multiple trades and tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with industrial water pumps, lift stations, float switches, temporary utility systems, or similar mechanical systems.
  • Experience repairing or refurbishing commercial, industrial, construction, rental, or fleet equipment.
  • Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead hoists, or similar material‑handling equipment.
  • Formal vocational or technical training in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical repair, or a related skilled trade.
  • Relevant trade certifications or documented apprenticeship experience.

Physical Demands & Working Environment

  • Ability to regularly lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs. and assist team members with maneuvering heavier components and equipment.
  • Ability to perform work requiring standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and reaching, including work within compact system enclosures.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment for extended periods.
  • Work is performed primarily within an active shop, warehouse, and yard environment with exposure to varying seasonal temperatures, power‑tool and equipment noise, dust, paint and coating fumes, water and wastewater equipment, and industrial vehicle traffic.
  • Required PPE will be provided and must be worn in accordance with company and site‑specific safety requirements
