Job description

Job Summary:

An Assembly Process Engineer is responsible to ensure that assembly equipment, tools, and systems are functioning efficiently, producing high-quality parts while minimizing waste and downtime, managing, and improving the assembly processes of products, particularly in manufacturing or production environments. They play a critical role in ensuring that products are assembled efficiently, meet quality standards, and are delivered on time. The job typically involves a combination of technical design, process improvement, and team coordination.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Process Development & Optimization: Design, develop, and optimize assembly processes (washing, pressing, leak or other testing, etc.) to improve production efficiency. Use techniques like Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma to optimize production line. Establish and document optimal machining and assembly processes for different materials, part geometries, components and production volumes.
  2. Equipment Operation: Select appropriate tools, machinery, and automation systems for assembly lines. Oversee the setup, maintenance, and calibration of assembly equipment. Ensure the safe and effective use of tools and machinery.
  3. Quality Control and Testing: Monitor machining and assembly quality and address any defects or issues that arise during production. Coordinate with quality assurance teams to ensure the final product is up to standard. Resolve quality issues by adjusting machine settings or processes and supporting root‑cause analysis.
  4. Troubleshooting: Provide technical support to the production team, offering solutions to improve uptime. Troubleshoot issues that arise during machining and assembly, whether related to machinery, processes, or quality defects.
  5. Training & Mentorship: Train Assembly operators and other team members on new machining techniques, tooling, and assembly process improvements. Act as a technical resource for less experienced operators or technicians. Coordinate with other engineering departments (like design engineering, production, or maintenance) to ensure smooth operations.
  6. Process Documentation & Standardization: Create and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, setup sheets, and PFMEA. Ensure standardization of processes and help implement lean manufacturing principles (e.g., 5S, Six Sigma).
  7. Data Analysis & Reporting: Collect and analyze data on machine performance, cycle times, and production efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement. Stay up to date with new technologies, tools, and best practices in assembly engineering.
Qualifications:
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanics, machine operations, and assembly systems.
  • CAD design for basic drawing modifications.
  • Problem‑Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure high precision and quality in manufactured parts.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members and other departments.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field is typically required.
  • Additional certifications or training in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar.
  • Relevant certifications or work experience can sometimes substitute for a formal degree.
Work Environment:

Assembly Engineers generally work in manufacturing plants, factories, or production facilities. They may be involved in working with teams on the floor or collaborating with engineering teams in an office environment. Their role often requires frequent interaction with different departments, such as production, quality assurance, and design.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including noise, temperature variation, and confined spaces.
