Job summary

Millennium Space Systems in El Segundo seeks a Mechanical Technician to perform complex production assembly on spacecraft structures and assemblies. You will read blueprints, use micrometers and calipers, and verify parts per written procedures.

This contract role involves fabricating, assembling, testing and inspecting hardware, while mentoring newer hires and coordinating with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure quality and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of experience with Structures Assembly, Mechanical Assembly, Electrical Assembly, and/or Final Assembly
  • 3+ years of experience following written and verbal work instructions
  • 3+ years of experience with blueprints, specifications, assembly drawings, and SOPs
  • 3+ years of experience using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)
  • Experience with materials (adhesives, composites, epoxy, fabrics, honeycomb core, laminates/plastics, resins)
  • Ability to stand/move to handle products for extended periods; capable of lifting 20lbs+ regularly

Responsibilities

  • Assembles, installs, tests, checks out and inspects mechanical spacecraft assemblies from blueprints and specifications
  • Performs verifications and visual inspections of assemblies
  • Operates various handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, lifts) and a wide range of machine tools
  • Interacts with Design/ Manufacturing Engineering, Materials, Procurement for quality and tooling issues
  • Supports in other mechanical areas as needed
  • Cross-trains/mentors new hires

This posting is for a contract assignment and is not a full-time employment offer with Boeing. Candidates selected for roles will be employed as contract workers through a Boeing approved 3rd party for the duration of the specified project.

Performs complex production assembly operations on structural parts, mechanical assemblies, subassemblies and aircraft systems, equipment and accessories using manual or automated assembly tools.

The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks in support of fabrication, integration and test of space flight systems and support equipment.

Position Responsibilities
  • Assembles, installs, tests, checks out and inspects mechanical spacecraft assemblies by interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings and specifications, and written assembly, integration, and test procedures
  • Performs second party verifications and visually inspects mechanical assemblies to drawings, engineering specifications, and written assembly, integration, and test procedures
  • Operates various materials handling equipment including forklifts, overhead cranes, aerial lift equipment, flight vehicle and sub-assembly transportation equipment, truck/tractor trailer combinations and other GSE as required
  • Operates a wide range of machine tools. Included but not limited to, drill press, grinders, chop saw, power, and hand tools
  • Interfaces and/or works closely with Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, Procurement and Shipping personnel on procedural issues involving design, methods, tooling, cost, and other areas involved in the control of product quality
  • Supports in other mechanical areas defined by Millennium Space Systems Leadership as business needs require
  • Cross-trains/mentors new hires
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • More than 5 years of experience with Structures Assembly, Mechanical Assembly, Electrical Assembly, and/or Final Assembly
  • More than 3 years of experience following written and verbal work instructions
  • More than 3 years of experience in working with blueprints, specifications, assembly drawings, and standard operating procedures
  • More than 3 years of experience in setting and using precision measuring tools and equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and/or dial indicators
  • More than 3 years of experience working with at least one of the following materials (Adhesives; Composites; Epoxy; Fabrics; Honeycomb Core; Laminates/plastics; Resins)
  • Ability to stand and move (reach, bend, or stoop) to handle products for extended periods of time with only short breaks
  • Capable of lifting 20lbs or more on a frequent basis
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
  • More than 3 years of experience using structures hand tools, test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers
  • More than 3 years of experience using all the following Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • More than 3 years of experience working in at least a 100,000 Class Clean Room environment
  • More than 5 years of experience building a variety of component-level space products (e.g. avionics boxes, batteries, mechanisms, optics, printed circuit board assemblies, solar arrays, etc.)
  • More than 5 years of experience with mechanical trouble shooting, disassembly and repair
