Job Summary:

The Asphalt Paving Supervisor coordinates and supervises asphalt construction projects by overseeing the daily operations of an asphalt crew(s) including safety, quality, and personnel management, while ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications and safety standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises all onsite functions including scheduling, material control, and day-to-day direction of field personnel;
  • Coordinates the activities of workers engaged in asphalt milling surfaces on highways, streets, and parking lots;
  • Operates milling equipment to properly mill asphalt/concrete to desired specifications based on usage;
  • Maintains communication with the shop concerning equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Reviews and adheres to construction schedules, ensuring milestones and completion dates are met;
  • Reads and executes plans and specifications (application rates, grades, slope, drainage, etc.);
  • Calculates material requirements for projects and related costs for efficient utilization;
  • Observes asphalt, concrete and subgrade to determine potential quality control issues and applies necessary corrections. Specifically, identifying segregation, drainage issues, densities, and other quality concerns of the job;
  • Documents and maintains labor, haul, equipment, production and cost information;
  • Oversees proper loading and unloading of equipment, transportation to and from job sites;
  • Completes all assigned work orders on a daily basis and other required paperwork including job location, tons of asphalt laid, yards of concrete placed, employee time, and any problems encountered;
  • Ensures a solid understanding of, and complies with, the principles of the company’s Safety Manual and Code of Safe Practices as well as the Fleet Safety Management Guidelines and Policies;
  • Coordinates with inspectors, work crew, truck drivers, and concrete plant;
  • Effectively communicates and shares information with the team and management;
  • Completes reports of issues or necessary repairs and forwards to Safety & Fleet Manager;
  • Detects and reports improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions;
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws;
  • Ensures compliance with all health, and safety, and environmental regulations, and with company policies and procedures;
  • Ensures all equipment is safe and efficient and in accordance with all relevant industry standards, policies, and site procedures to minimize risk of injury, property damage or loss of life;
  • Trains new and existing employees in safe, productive and efficient work processes;
  • Instructs crewmembers in a professional manner in order to relay expectations and instills motivation;
  • Handles and thoroughly investigates all employee concerns;
  • Participates as a vital team member and contributes toward the success of the company;
  • Leads by example; and
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
