Job summary

Port View Preparatory, an ABA-focused educational setting, seeks an ASL Language Support Paraeducator to provide direct ASL communication and language reinforcement for a Deaf student during the school day. You will implement individualized programs and gather accurate data to support progress in collaboration with teachers and the behavior department.

• Competency in ASL grammar, nonmanual markers, and signing nuances.
• Ability to adjust communication to student needs without Anglified word order.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction and supervision of the Education Specialist (e.g., teacher) and the behavior department (e.g., BCBA), the ASL Language Support Paraeducator will provide consistent, direct ASL communication, language modeling, and language reinforcement for a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student throughout the school day. The ASL Language Support Paraeducator is also responsible for the day-to-day implementation of students' individualized education and behavior programs, and accurate data collection of the student(s) under their care.

Required Qualifications

• Associate of Arts (AA) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in ASL, Deaf Studies preferred
• ASLPI Level 4 or higher or SLPI:ASL Advanced or higher
• Ability to understand and communicate in ASL at a natural conversational rate across routine, social, academic, and school-related topics.
• Demonstrated competency in:
  • ASL grammar and syntax
  • Receptive and expressive ASL
  • Nonmanual grammatical markers
  • Classifiers and depicting signs
  • Fingerspelling and numbers
  • Vocabulary selection and conceptually accurate signing
  • Recognizing and repairing communication breakdowns
• Ability to adjust communication to the student's age, developmental level, language proficiency, and individual communication needs without reducing ASL to isolated signs or English-based word order.
• Understanding of Deaf culture, visual communication practices, and the importance of direct communication and student autonomy.
• Ability to follow language-support strategies developed by the student's teachers and qualified DHH or related-service professionals.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with classroom teacher, and other support staff.
• Ability to maintain student confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience communicating regularly with Deaf or Hard of Hearing children or adolescents.
• Experience working in a school, special education program, or other child-centered setting.
• Coursework or training in Deaf studies, language development, or Deaf education.
• Experience supporting a student with additional learning, communication, developmental, and/or behavioral needs.
