Sign Language Interpreter

Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter for Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Reports to: Principal and Special Services Director or designee

Unit Classification: PSE Para-Educator

Primary Purpose

The role assists in the instruction or supervision of deaf/hard of hearing students, providing voice to sign and sign to voice support, performing classroom clerical tasks, assisting communication between students, teachers, and parents, contributing to evaluation of students’ progress, and serving as a resource to other school personnel.

Essential Functions
  • Adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher to support and reinforce lesson plans for assigned students.
  • Administers tests and skill assessments under guidance of a teacher to evaluate language ability and subject proficiency.
  • Assesses classroom and other spaces for deaf/hard of hearing students to ensure appropriate setup for learning.
  • Attends Individual Education Plan meetings with assigned students to provide input into evaluation and objective implementation.
  • Attends in‑service meetings and workshops to convey and gather information necessary for successful educational processes.
  • Confers with teachers, parents, and community agencies to assist in evaluating student progress and objectives.
  • Instructs students individually or in small groups on remediation and achievement of language goals.
  • Interprets in meetings and activities, providing communication between voice to sign and sign to voice.
  • Maintains confidential and non‑confidential documents, files, lists, and records documenting activities.
  • Performs record‑keeping and clerical functions such as scheduling and copying.
  • Prepares documents and reports to communicate information to parents and staff.
  • Provides instruction to deaf/hard of hearing students under teacher supervision in accordance with lesson plans.
  • Provides interpretation for group meetings to facilitate content understanding.
  • Provides teachers with input on evaluating student progress and objectives.
  • Translates verbal communication for effective sign/voice communication.
  • Uses adapted classroom work and assessments under teacher direction to support outcomes.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Working Conditions

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; require 10% sitting, 10% walking, 80% standing. Wear dark or solid‑colored clothing to minimize visual distractions.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have successfully achieved the performance standard established by the PESB by passing one of the PESB interpreter assessments.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), Signed Exact English (SEE), and other signed systems.
  • Knowledge of technical signs and vocabulary used in educational settings.
  • Basic math skills and ability to read, write, and present information.
  • Ability to hear spoken language, use ASL/SEE, and interpret spoken English at appropriate rate.
  • Understanding and use proper English grammar and vocabulary.
  • Translation of academic language to appropriate cognitive level.
  • Professional conduct, confidentiality, and time management.

Licenses and Special Requirements:

  • Valid photo identification.
  • Social Security Card.
  • WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
Evaluation

Evaluated by the Special Education Director or designee.
