Job summary

Houston County Schools seeks an Interpreter to support deaf or hard-of-hearing students by providing ASL interpretation and transliteration across instructional settings. The role includes determining each student’s best communication method and ensuring accurate conveyance of messages in sign or oral form.

The interpreter will collaborate with teachers and monitor language development, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to school policies and state regulations.

Qualifications

• Fluency in American English and American Sign Language (ASL)
• Effective oral and written communication skills required
• Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or complete 48 semester hours or pass WorkKeys as an alternative

Responsibilities

• Interprets or transliterates messages from auditory to visual systems for deaf or hard-of-hearing students
• Interprets messages from visual systems to spoken English
• Determines student’s preferred mode of communication and delivers messages accordingly
• Collaborates with teachers on language assessment and development for deaf or hard-of-hearing students
• Maintains confidentiality of school/workplace information
• Demonstrates initiative to identify problems and opportunities for improvement
• Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership
• Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely manner
