Job summary

PORTER COUNTY EDUCATION SERVICES SCHOOL DISTRICT is seeking an Educational Interpreter to provide American Sign Language (ASL) services at Chesterton High School for deaf or hard of hearing students. This role ensures communication access throughout the school day to support full participation.

The interpreter will collaborate with teachers and staff, adapt interpretation to students' needs, and maintain confidentiality while pursuing ongoing professional development and certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• EIPA score 3.5 or higher, or state credential.
• ASL proficiency and other communication modes as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide ASL interpretation in classroom instruction, assemblies, school events, and other academic settings.
• Facilitate communication between deaf or hard of hearing students and teachers, staff, and peers.
• Interpret in a manner that reflects the student's communication mode and level of understanding.
• Assist in fostering independence and self-advocacy skills in students.
• Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure materials and instructions are accessible.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards.
• Stay current with professional practices, including ongoing training and certification requirements.
