Job summary

Oak Ridge School District Linden Elementary seeks an American Sign Language Educational Interpreter to provide accurate, impartial communication access for Deaf or hard-of-hearing students across instructional and school-related settings.

The interpreter collaborates with teachers and service providers, interprets and transliterates as needed, and maintains confidentiality while supporting access to the educational program in accordance with district policies.

Qualifications

• Advanced proficiency in American Sign Language and strong command of English.
• Professional interpreting techniques and transliteration when required.
• Educational terminology and understanding of Deaf/hard-of-hearing needs.
• Confidentiality, impartiality, and ethical boundaries in school settings.
• Ability to adapt language to student age and documented needs.
• Strong relationships with students, families, staff and community.

Responsibilities

• Interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English accurately and impartially.
• Provide interpreting and transliterating services in classrooms, meetings, events and field trips.
• Interpret grade-level content and specialized vocabulary while preserving meaning.
• Support access identified in IEP or other plans.
• Collaborate with teachers and specialists on communication access needs.
• Prepare for assignments by reviewing materials and schedules.
• Convey auditory information and school cues for student access or safety.
• Follow teacher direction; do not replace instruction or modify curriculum alone.
• Maintain privacy and comply with FERPA and district policies.
