Job summary

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is hiring an Industrial Hygienist for the Asbestos Control Program in Queens. The role focuses on conducting safety and health investigations, inspecting facilities, and enforcing asbestos regulations to protect public health and the environment.

The ideal candidate will prepare detailed reports, collect samples, interpret lab data, issue violations, and provide testimony at hearings while coordinating with City, State, and Federal agencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 28 credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational health or safety engineering.
• Bachelor's degree with 28 credits in physical or natural sciences, civil/mechanical/environmental/chemical engineering or toxicology and one year of related experience.
• Bachelor's degree and two years related work experience as described above.
• Combination of education and experience equivalent to the above; credit substitutions apply; must have a Bachelor's degree.

Responsibilities

• Conduct safety and health investigations to ensure compliance with Asbestos Rules and Regulations.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports with site dimensions, diagrams and photographs; collect asbestos samples.
• Interpret laboratory reports, review air sampling data, and issue Notices of Violations.
• Prepare case files and evidence; provide testimony at Environmental Control Board Hearings and trials.
• Respond to public reports and emergencies; perform joint inspections with other agencies.
