Job summary

Sojourner House in Providence, RI is seeking Relief Advocates (As-Needed) to cover evenings, weekends, holidays, and staff absences at our Northern Rhode Island Shelter. In-person work at shelter locations is required.

Responsibilities include maintaining a safe environment, providing emotional support, crisis helpline assistance, intake referrals, and helping guests meet basic needs while enforcing shelter rules.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus related work experience or an Associate's Degree in related fields such as social work or human services.
• One to two years in human services; domestic violence experience preferred but not required.
• Must be organized and demonstrate strong leadership skills.
• Bilingual Spanish is a plus but not required
• Must have a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle; travel between locations may be required during shift.
• Computer literate in spreadsheet and word processing.
• Able to work a flexible schedule.
• Reliable and self-motivated.
• Must pass background check, if offered a position.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe and secure environment at the shelter facility.
• Provide emotional support and education on domestic violence to guests; assist in adjusting to their environment.
• Answer the helpline with crisis intervention and referral information.
• Perform intake interviews and refer cases to full-time case managers when appropriate.
• Assist clients in securing basic needs: food, clothing, safety, transportation, education.
• Help guests follow shelter rules and procedures to foster trust.
• Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the facility as needed.
• Maintain communication with other shelter staff.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
