Job summary

Tappan is seeking an Artwork Coordinator & Handler to manage the physical handling, logistics, and coordination of artwork across our gallery, warehouse, and exhibitions. This role blends hands-on art handling with systems-based coordination and requires comfort inspecting and packing delicate works while maintaining inventory across digital platforms.

Responsibilities include packing, installation, QC checks, and coordinating with framers, shippers, and artists, plus updating the Shopify

Qualifications

• Demonstrated professional art handling experience.
• Strong knowledge of artwork, materials, and care standards.

• Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Calendar).
• Proficiency with Photoshop and photo editing.
• Experience with Shopify and Asana (or comparable platforms).

• Warehouse or logistics experience.

The ideal candidate brings a genuine knowledge of and passion for contemporary art alongside strong operational discipline and attention to detail and desire to learn and grow.

Position Overview

This role combines hands-on art handling with systems-based coordination, requiring someone equally comfortable inspecting and packing a delicate work and maintaining accurate inventory across digital platforms. The ideal candidate brings a genuine knowledge of and passion for contemporary art alongside strong operational discipline and attention to detail and desire to learn and grow.

Key Responsibilities

• Handle, pack, unpack, install, and transport artwork with the utmost care, following professional art handling best practices
• Color correcting and photo editing
• Perform quality control and condition checks on incoming and outgoing artwork, documenting any issues and flagging discrepancies
• Keep the inventory management system synchronized with the Shopify website, ensuring product availability, statuses, and details are consistent across platforms
• Coordinate on launch planning with artists
• Communicate professionally with external vendors, including framers, shippers, fabricators, and freight partners
• Assist with the setup, installation, and breakdown of exhibitions and pop-ups
• Provide on-site support during exhibitions and exhibition events/parties
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe handling and storage environment

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated professional art handling experience
• Strong knowledge of artwork, materials, and proper handling and care standards
• Experience performing quality control and condition reporting
• Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Calendar)
• Proficiency with Photoshop and Photo Editing
• Experience with Shopify and Asana (or comparable e-commerce and project management platforms)
• Experience with inventory management systems and maintaining data accuracy across platforms
• Warehouse or logistics experience
• Excellent communication skills, particularly in coordinating with external vendors and cross-functional teams
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Past curatorial experience
• Familiarity with AI project management and analytics processes and/or desire to learn
• Familiarity with contemporary art (open to candidates building their knowledge in this area)
  

Additional Requirements

• Available to travel a few times per year
• Available to assist with exhibitions and exhibition events, which may include evening or weekend hours
