Job summary

South Suburban Parks and Recreation is seeking an Arts & Enrichment Ceramics/Pottery Instructor I-II to teach ceramics and related enrichment classes. The role includes evening and weekend sessions, working with diverse participants, and sometimes offsite events.

The position is part-time, non-exempt, pays $17.05 to $22.75 per hour, and requires strong classroom management, safety awareness, and effective communication with students, parents, and staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching experience in art; 2 years preferred.
  • Experience teaching art/enrichment is preferred.

This is an ongoing recruitment process, with no specific closingdate. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis.

$17.05 - $22.75 per hour

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Arts and Enrichment Coordinator,this position teaches art and enrichment classes for all ages in bothgroup and individual settings. Also teaches specialized arts,enrichment classes, birthday parties and special events offsite. Thisposition will primarily teach ceramics classes and possibly otherclasses based on individual expertise. Classes will normally be onevenings and weekends, but some classes may be offered during the day.This position teaches wheel throwing and potentially handbuildingclasses when needed.

  • Responsible for planning and the instruction of art and enrichmentclasses for participants with varying levels of skill and ability.Must participate in each class and with every level; adaptinginstruction techniques to meet the needs of participants.
  • Maintains course records and rosters.
  • Communicate with co-workers, patrons and coordinators effectivelyand efficiently.
  • Present art to students by showing examples of selected art,provide students with tools and raw materials to produce their ownart, teach students how to use tools and raw materials properly
  • Help promote arts and enrichment programming.
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment/supplies are available forclasses and events; set up and take down. Perform required cleaning.
  • Inspects and reports tool/equipment condition on a regular basisto ensure safe use.
  • Monitor supply inventory and ensure responsible use of supplies toprevent waste.
  • Be prepared, creative and energized when teaching.
  • Provide a safe learning environment and manage the classroomeffectively; keep students in line of vision at all times/never turnback on class.
  • Enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quicklyand calmly; administer first aid as needed. CompletesAccident/Incident report.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provideinformation within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in anefficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicateissues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Travel to offsite special events to instruct and lead art andenrichment classes.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs forco-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutesfor all scheduled and published shifts if unable to work.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a high schooldiploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of teaching experience in art.
  • Experience teaching art and/or enrichment is preferred.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with a high schooldiploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of professional teachingexperience in art.
  • Experience teaching art and/or enrichment is preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License or the abilityto obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must beinsurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the durationof employment.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and methodologies.
  • Must be knowledgeable of positive interaction techniques withchildren, students and their parents, adult and senior students, andstaff. Demonstrates use of these techniques in all interactions.
  • Must be able to work with students in a constructive and caringmanner while creating unique and fun art projects and teachingsafety in the classroom.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both childrenand adults.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Material and Equipment Used:

To successfully perform the required job duties, this positionregularly uses a phone, computer, fax, copies, digital/video cameras,and tools and equipment required for specific course curriculum (e.gart tools, clay, etc.).

This position works indoors in a classroom or recreation center andmust be able to work in a noisy environment. May also work in a busyoffice environment subject to continuous interruptions. This positionregularly uses equipment and tools required for specific coursecurriculum, and office supplies such as a telephone, computer, faxmachine, and copier. May occasionally work outside subject to variableweather, ecosystems and landscapes.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to demonstrate and perform the techniques unique tovarying art disciplines. Must be able to push, pull or balance. Upperbody strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 25 poundsunassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 75 pounds with assistance.Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, and depthperception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand,walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manualdexterity and the ability to handle objects. The ability to talk andhear via the telephone, email, and through face-to-face communicationis needed.
