Job summary

South Suburban Parks and Recreation is seeking an evening/weekend gymnastics instructor to teach pre-team and CARA level progressions, focusing on safe technique across all four events under the supervision of the Gymnastics Coordinator.

Responsibilities include spotting, equipment setup, communicating with parents, maintaining safety, attending staff meetings, and collaborating with the coaching team; willingness to learn advanced spotting and to work regularly 2+ hours per week.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Willing to follow provided lesson plans and stay engaged with participants.
  • One year coaching gymnastics or strong background in gymnastics knowledge and participation for a minimum of 4 years will be considered.
  • Current AED/CPR/First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days.
  • Concussion recognition training required and renewed annually.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe learning environment by spotting patrons during practices and enforcing safety rules.
  • Attend staff meetings, clinics, CARA meetings, and training.
  • Set up and take down equipment; perform preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Inform parents of student progress and accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate competence in various gymnastic skills and spotting techniques across levels.
  • Communicate professionally with team members, head coach, and coordinator.
  • Respond to emergencies, administer first aid, and complete incident reports.
  • Work regular afternoon/evening shifts, with some weekend availability.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Gymnastics Coordinator, thisposition is responsible for pre-team/CARA team gymnastics instruction.This job is responsible for teaching safe gymnastics progressions,technique, and routines on all 4 events. This job requires shiftsduring evening hours and may require weekends.

  • Provide a safe learning environment by spotting patronsappropriately during practices; always keep students in line ofvision/never turn back on class; enforce safety and program rules,policies, and regulations.
  • Attend meetings on a periodic basis, including staff meetings,spotting clinics, CARA meetings and staff training.
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment is available for classes andevents; set up and take down equipment. Completes preventativemaintenance by inspecting equipment on a regular basis.
  • Inform parents if any difficulties arise and keep them informed ofaccomplishments of students.
  • Competence in a variety of gymnastics skills, progressions, andspotting techniques at all levels of gymnastics preferred.Willingness to learn spot technique at more advanced levels acceptable.
  • Be prepared, creative, and energized when teaching. Activelyparticipate in positive, encouraging gymnastics culture of Sparks gymnastics.
  • Work as a member of a cohesive coaching team. Communicateprofessionally and openly with other team staff members, head coach,and gymnastics coordinator.
  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quicklyand calmly; administer first aid as needed. CompleteAccident/Incident report.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provideinformation within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in anefficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicateissues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; sub forco-workers when available; responsible for securing substitutes forshifts unable to work. Able to commit to regularly working at least2 hours per week in afternoons/evenings.
  • Assist with two events (i.e. Maintenance Week, Home Meets, orspecial events) per calendar year in addition to scheduled shifts.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be able and willing to follow instructions of provided lessonplans, remain engaged with participants.
  • One (1) year of experience coaching gymnastics or a strongbackground in gymnastics knowledge and participation for a minimumof 4 years will be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
  • Current certifications in AED/CPR/First Aid or the ability toobtain such certifications within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Concussion recognition training is required and must be renewed annually.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Competent in a variety of gymnastics skills, progressions, andspotting techniques as well as competent in the use of a variety ofgymnastics equipment.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally andestablish and maintain working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both childrenand adults.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellentinterpersonal and communication skills.
Material and Equipment Used:

Demonstrate proper safety knowledge and use of all gymnasticsequipment. Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and generaloffice equipment (computer, copier, phone, etc.).

Work is performed indoors, working in a gym environment with frequentinterruptions and distractions. Working in rooms of varioustemperatures, indoor noisy environment with music and backgroundnoise. Will be exposed to moving parts and dust.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to push, pull or balance. Requires spotting andassisting patrons during the performance of gymnastic moves. Upperbody strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 50 poundsunassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 100 pounds with assistance.Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, depthperception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand,walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manualdexterity and the ability to handle objects. The ability to talk andhear via the telephone, e-mail, and through face-to-face communicationis needed.
