Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and instruct coursework.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate curriculum with Department Chairperson/Program Director.
  • Maintain updated syllabi, outcomes, and gradebooks in the LMS.
  • Select textbooks and teaching materials in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Use appropriate instructional methods for various learning styles.
  • Instruct using methods including face-to-face, hybrid, virtual or online.
  • Provide academic and career counseling to students and promote student leadership.
  • Develop tests or other evaluation tools for student assessment.
  • Design and administer semesterly evaluations for grade determination.
  • Develop and deliver online courses meeting Quality Matters guidelines.
  • Engage in community service and professional development.
  • Measure student learning outcomes to drive instructional improvement.
  • Perform duties within established time frames; participate in required tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned to meet the college's mission.

Job description

The primary task of the instructor at Southern Union State Community College is to instruct students in activities designed to promote intellectual growth. Essential duties and responsibilities of an instructor include commitments to students in the classroom, the teaching discipline, students outside the classroom, the College, and the community. The instructor is subject to work at varied locations based on student and operational demand at any or all sites and locations served by the College.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule D1 Salary range: $48,454 - $98,138 for nine-month employment; Summer employment may be available dependent on enrollment: $14,959 - $30,351

Benefits: Full time employees are entitled to the College’s benefit package to include: PEEHIP, retirement, leave (annual, sick, and personal), etc.

Start date: January 2027

In addition to adhering to the policies, procedures, and guidelines as specified by the Southern Union State Community College Employee Handbook, Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees, Instructional Dean, and Division/Department Chairperson/Program Director, duties include the following:

  1. Plan, organize, and instruct coursework.
  2. Work with the Department Chairperson/Program Director to develop, implement, and evaluate curriculum.
  3. Maintain updated syllabi, outcomes, and gradebooks in the College learning management system (LMS) according to the guidelines in the Instructional Handbook.
  4. Select textbooks and teaching materials in collaboration with colleagues as approved by the Department Chairperson/Program Director.
  5. Use a method of instruction appropriate to the type of learning required.
  6. Instruct students using interactive techniques including but not limited to lecture, demonstration, clinical or lab supervision.
  7. Instruct students using a variety of delivery modes, including face-to-face, hybrid, virtual or online.
  8. Provide academic and career counseling to students and promote student leadership and enrichment experiences.
  9. Develop appropriate tests or other tools for student evaluation.
  10. Design and administer evaluations for grade determination each semester.
  11. Develop and deliver online courses that meet Quality Matters guidelines.
  12. Actively participates in community service.
  13. Engage in appropriate professional development in order to remain current in discipline and teaching techniques.
  14. Measure and use student learning outcomes to create a process of continuous instructional improvement.
  15. Perform duties within established time frames (e.g. attendance verification, official rolls, grades, etc.).
  16. Other duties as assigned to meet the mission of the college.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours or 27 graduate quarter hours in the discipline is required.
  2. Willingness to meet other appropriate requirements for credentialing/certification as required by accreditation entities is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience using a learning management system (LMS), such as Canvas and/or Blackboard is preferred.
  2. Experience teaching online courses is preferred.
  3. Experience using Microsoft Office is preferred.
