Job summary

First Student is seeking a Trainer to train and educate on safety and compliance, supporting multiple locations across the assigned service area. The role involves classroom and behind-the-wheel training and coaching to operators, with travel to about 30 locations across the region.

A high school diploma and current school bus credentials are required, with DOT safety guidelines and strong communication skills essential.

Qualifications

  • Requires current school bus credentials to provide driver training (ODE).
  • Behind-the-Wheel trainer certification preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience training school bus drivers preferred.
  • 1–3 years of transportation, safety, or related experience in school bus industry.
  • Knowledge of federal and state safety/environment regulations.

  • Provides classroom and/or behind-the-wheel training to new operators or retraining of current operators.
  • Provides training and coaching to location personnel.
  • Tracks attendees and maintains training documentation per regulations and company policy.
  • Supports safety initiatives including accident investigations, compliance documentation, safety meetings, and ongoing operator development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides classroom and/or behind-the-wheel training to new operators or re-training of current operators
  • Provides training and coaching to location personnel
  • Tracks attendees and maintains training documentation based on regulations and company policy
  • Supports safety initiatives including accident investigations, compliance documentation, safety meetings, and ongoing operator development
Trainer Required Experience and Skills
  • This role requires approximately 60% travel across approximately 30 locations
  • Must possess current school bus credentials required to provide school bus driver training, ODE
  • Behind-the-Wheel Trainer certification preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years of experience training school bus drivers preferred
  • 1-3 years of transportation, safety, or related experience within the school bus industry
  • Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations regarding safety and environmental issues
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while adapting quickly to changing situations
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
  • Possess a reliable vehicle to travel throughout the service area as needed
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality
  • Subject to DOT drug testing and physical. DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.
Language Requirement

This role requires English proficiency. Federal, state, and local requirements, including U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, require training, safety communications, company policies, employment documents, and other job-related communications be conducted in English.
