Description
The Area Safety Manager (ASM) will provide support and leadership to the local Safety & Operations Managers of school transportation facilities within New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. The ASM will travel to each location to coordinate driver development and overall safety efforts, including recordkeeping, training, and compliance with safety-related local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policy. The ASM provides guidance and assistance to training personnel and acts as a resource to the local Terminal Managers.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist with developing cost-effective safety and training programs for the region.
- Ensure mandated bus evacuation drills, driver proficiencies, and driver check-ride evaluations are performed biennially in each operation.
- Ensure all employees in the region receive training specific to their job functions.
- Review training records according to US DOT and STA company policy.
- Audit driver qualification credential files regularly to ensure current compliance.
- Monitor programs conducted by instructors in each operation.
- Maintain accident statistics and prepare monthly reports on preventable accidents, injuries, and probable causes.
- Assist in developing accident prevention programs.
- Identify recurring accidents within divisions and recommend remedies.
- Participate in monthly safety meetings, workshops, and conferences.
- Assist local operations with classroom or behind-the-wheel training during instructor shortages.
- Support driver and instructor recruitment efforts across locations.
- Assist in scheduling and facilitating annual driver evaluations.
- Understand and ensure proper wheelchair securement and lift procedures for special needs transportation.
- Evaluate unsafe bus stops and conduct on-road evaluations.
- Conduct accident investigations.
- Operate buses and perform related duties as needed.
- Perform other duties as required by STA Senior Management.
Required Skills/Abilities - Essential Functions

- Be knowledgeable in operations policies and procedures.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills.
- Evaluate and correct driver/trainee skills in classroom and behind-the-wheel settings.
- Have knowledge of Federal and State regulations.
- Willingness to work over 40 hours per week, including some nights or weekends.
- Regularly visit operation sites within the region to positively impact operations.
- May need to obtain a CDL license.
- Travel as required, including overnight stays.
- Attend work reliably and pass necessary background checks.
- Work effectively in indoor and outdoor environments.
- Perform essential job functions and adhere to company policies.
- Exhibit a strong work ethic, motivation, and leadership qualities.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least three years of school bus driving or related experience with driver training and defensive driving responsibilities.
- Experience managing multiple locations or facilities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of school bus and DOT safety regulations.
- Minimum of 2 years in a safety supervisory role.
