Step Into Your New Role

Kleinfelder is seeking an externally focused Area Business Development Manager to help lead our business development efforts and drive net sales growth within Northern California and Pacific Area. In this position, you will be responsible for driving business development activities across multiple markets and service lines, including meeting with clients and teaming partners, participating in professional external organizations, identifying new opportunities, planning and positioning to win these opportunities (capture planning), analyzing Requests for Proposal (RFP), and making go/no-go decisions across multiple markets and business lines in Northern California and the Pacific (Hawaii & Guam).

Abilities of the ideal candidate:

  • Outgoing personality and outward focus.
  • Excellent grasp of marketing fundamentals, visual communications, and knowledge of theoretical and practical developments in the A/E/C industry. (Experience in A/E/C market is required.)
  • The ability to develop win themes and integrate them throughout a proposal.
  • Strong grammar, writing, and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Client service mindset and ability to work closely with technical professionals (engineers, scientists, and construction professionals).
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to organize, prepare for, and facilitate bi-weekly marketing meetings.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively as part of a team, and with senior management/executive staff.
  • Flexible and adaptive to changing priorities, deadlines, and directions in a dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead business development efforts across all Kleinfelder offices in Northern CA and the Pacific, supervising an area-wide sales team.
  • Identify new business opportunities by researching potential clients or markets to determine expansion areas for the company.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and potential clients, partners, and stakeholders across multiple markets (e.g., Water, Transportation, Power, Commercial) and service lines (Engineering & Construction, Environmental Permitting and Planning).
  • Develop sales strategies by analyzing market trends to drive revenue and achieve company goals.
  • Negotiate contracts and deals, including non-disclosure and teaming agreements, to mutual satisfaction.
  • Conduct market research to gather data on industry trends, customer preferences, and competitors.
  • Collaborate with other departments like marketing and product development to align business goals.
  • Manage budgets and forecast net sales, revenue, and costs related to business development.
  • Report on business performance through reports and presentations for stakeholders, including senior management and investors.
  • Coordinate marketing activities to support business development.
  • Participate in strategic go/no-go decisions for key clients, based on systematic review of relevant facts.
  • Drive proposal management and development processes to meet client deadlines and expectations.
  • Create and modify marketing materials and write content to communicate services and capabilities effectively.
  • Research and organize information from various sources to generate business development documents and presentations, synthesizing data into coherent materials.
  • Assist in developing proposal strategies that leverage the company's strengths and innovative ideas for a competitive edge.
  • Support area leaders, account managers, and project managers in assessing client development needs and implementing supportive processes and programs.
  • Help technical professionals track and drive marketing pursuits.
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members and maintain marketing information systems.

Position Competencies and Requirements:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective communication skills with a variety of audiences.
  • Customer service orientation (internal and external).
  • Excellent project and time management skills.
  • Experience with CRM systems, preferably Deltek, is highly desirable.

Experience & Academic Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Journalism, Communications, or a related field is preferred.

10+ years of related A/E/C experience (preferably 20 years), with 4+ years of professional marketing and/or sales experience in a consulting engineering firm or related service business (preferably 10+ years).
