Job summary

UIC Municipal Services seeks a USS Apprentice to learn operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems across North Slope villages. You will rotate through seven villages, work with a USS, and maintain logs and reports to Utqiagvik and central office.

This hands-on position requires safety focus, long shifts, and travel between remote sites with housing provided and a $70/day per diem. Travel from Anchorage or Fairbanks is paid by the employer.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass a respirator fit test.
• Ability to follow directions from the USS and supervisors.
• Willingness to study exam preparation materials outside of work hours.
• Ability to coordinate with Training Administrator and proctors.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with Alaska DEC regulations for utility plant operations.
• Maintain a safe working environment and report safety concerns.
• Support, train, or mentor local utility operators as needed.
• Communicate with the central office daily via phone or email.
• Perform operational tasks at small water and wastewater treatment facilities.
• Operate and maintain water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
• Inspect, operate, monitor, and maintain equipment and systems in water/wastewater treatment.
• Monitor plant operations using visual inspection and SCADA systems.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements for treated water and wastewater effluent.
• Coordinate with local resources to identify and repair leaks within operator capabilities.
• Issue public notifications such as boil water advisories or service shutdowns.
• Provide temporary water and sewer solutions during service interruptions.
