Job summary

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation invites applications for a 12-month Edward A. Chappell Architectural Research Fellowship.

The fellow will conduct fieldwork on early Chesapeake buildings, producing measured drawings, photographs, and documentation to support preservation goals. The successful candidate will present findings as a written article or at a professional conference and collaborate with internal and external partners to advance the Foundation’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in preservation, history, architecture, material culture or a related field.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • 5-year Motor Vehicle Record prior to employment
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • No more than 1 moving violation or at fault accident within 12 months
  • No more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within 36 months
  • No serious motor vehicle violations including DUI/DWI, suspended or revoked license

Responsibilities

  • Conducts original research and fieldwork on early Chesapeake structures to support preservation and educational goals.
  • Fosters productive working relationships within and outside the department.
  • Prepares reports and scholarly articles to support education and preservation missions.
  • Documents buildings and architectural features to Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) standards.
  • Prepares 2D and 3D architectural documentation drawings.
  • Presents lectures and audio-visual presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborates with partners to complete projects and preservation efforts.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
