Job summary

The Archaeologist VI at Eocene Environmental Group serves as the subject matter expert, providing technical expertise for cultural resource projects across New Mexico. You will lead fieldwork, design research and ensure regulatory compliance while delivering robust reports.

The position requires PI/Project Director eligibility in NM, SHPO listing, and extensive experience with Phase I–III work, GIS data collection, and safety compliance. Collaborative team environment with on-site fieldwork.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field.
• Currently listed in the New Mexico SHPO Directory at the PI/Project Director level.
• Minimum 12 years of relevant archaeology experience.
• Proficiency in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology; ability to describe geological and cultural strata and identify deposits.
• Competence in documenting sites and IOs/IFs; ability to conduct probing or shovel testing.
• Strong navigation skills; ability to operate 4WD vehicles over rough terrain.
• Ability to be listed on agency permits as PI.
• Clear communication, organization, accuracy, motivation, dependability, and teamwork.
• Ability to work in varied weather conditions.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Proficiency in reading/writing/speaking English.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Principal Investigator for assigned projects and reports.

• Conduct Class III/Phase I surveys and document sites/IOs/IFs.
• Conduct Testing/Phase 2 and Data Recoveries/Phase 3 as needed.
• Prepare drafts and support deliverable submission to agencies.
• Utilize ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 with GPS data collection.
• Collect GPS/geospatial data with sub-meter accuracy.
• Participate in project meetings and adapt to supervisor feedback.
• Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.

On-Call with the potential to hire on a part-time basis

Compensation:

$45-$55 per hour, based on relevant experience

JOB SUMMARY:

The Archaeologist VI serves as a subject matter expert, providing technical expertise for cultural resource projects across a variety of projects within the specified region.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Serve as Principal Investigator for assigned projects and reports
• Provide subject matter expertise in New Mexico archaeology, including field methodologies, research design, data interpretation, and regulatory requirements
• Conduct Class III/Phase I cultural resource surveys and independently document archaeological sites and isolated occurrences/isolated finds (IOs/IFs)
• Conduct Testing/Phase 2 and Data Recoveries/Phase 3 as needed
• Complete cultural desktop reviews, pre-field literature and records checks, and background/archival research to inform field strategies and reporting
• Prepare draft deliverables (reports, technical excavation/testing logs, site forms), and support deliverable coordination, review, and submission to agencies
• Utilize field technology (ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 paired with sub-meter GPS receivers; tablets such as iPad or Samsung Galaxy) for data collection and navigation
• Collect GPS and other geospatial data with sub-meter accuracy; review and verify site location accuracy and attributes
• Participate in / lead project meetings; follow supervisor instruction and adjust work based on feedback; maintain regular and punctual attendance and communication
• Adhere to safety protocols and company culture of safety and employee ownership; comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Master’s Degree or higher in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field
• Currently listed in the New Mexico SHPO Directory at the Principal Investigator/Project Director level
• Minimum 12 years of relevant experience
• Proficiency in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in assigned project regions; ability to describe/differentiate geological and cultural strata and identify archaeological deposits
• Competence in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs; ability to conduct probing or shovel testing
• Strong navigation skills (GPS/compass); ability to operate 4WD vehicles over rough terrain.
• Ability to be listed on agency permits as Principal Investigator
• Clear communication, organization, accuracy, motivation, dependability, and trustworthiness; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)
• Perform work duties independently and efficiently, while working in a team setting
• Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Register of Professional Archaeologists / Registered Archaeologist (RPA/RA)
• Ability to be listed on agency permits as a Principal Investigator, including the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
• Prior experience in designated regions (e.g., California, Pacific/Northwest, Great Basin, Midwest, MidAtlantic)
• Established relationships with New Mexico state and federal agencies, tribal entities, or regional clients
• Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications and sub-meter GPS receivers
• Previous trainings related to NHPA, NEPA, FERC, or other cultural/environmental regulations
• Strong writing and editing skills
