Job description

Overview

Stantec's Cultural Resources team seeks on-call archaeological field technicians to support field projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, primarily in Maine and New York. The role involves executing fieldwork under supervision, extensive travel with overnight stays, and occasional lab tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute archaeological fieldwork tasks such as controlled surface survey, shovel test survey, and excavation.
  • Clean, catalog, photograph, and label artifacts recovered from surface collections and excavations.
  • Assist in setting up site grids, datums, excavation units and mapping site plans and shovel tests.
  • Work with laboratory research and analysis as needed.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience conducting Phase I, II, and III archaeological surveys (inventory, testing, data recovery).
  • Proficiency in digital field recording (e.g., ESRI Field Maps app for ArcGIS).
  • Ability to identify historic and precontact artifacts and cultural features following standard collection procedures.
  • Strong teamwork, adaptability, and ability to work independently in varied weather.
  • Physical stamina to walk, hike, carry up to 50 lbs, and perform physically demanding tasks in rugged terrain.
  • Dedicated to safety culture; safety training certificates are an asset.
  • Detail‑oriented, resourceful, self‑motivated, with strong initiative.
  • Positive, energetic attitude.
  • Willingness to travel out of town for extended periods.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related field.
  • Preferred: completion of an archaeology field school.
  • Preferred: at least 6 months of experience conducting surveys and excavations.
  • Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture.
  • Strong technical and communication skills; ability to make field decisions.
  • Valid driver’s license and personal transportation.
Location

United States | ME | Topsham (travel to Maine and New York)

Pay Range
  • Locations in MN, OH, VT, & various CA, NY Areas: $45,500.00 - $63,700.00 annually
  • Locations in WA, DC & various CA, MA areas: $53,700.00 - $75,200.00 annually
