Job Overview

Stantec is recruiting three part‑time on‑call Archaeological Field Technicians to work from our Central Pennsylvania office and from our Hampton, Virginia office for future projects nationwide. Candidates must be located within normal commuting distance of the respective office.

Key Responsibilities

• Survey transects up to fifteen miles in length daily.
• Recordation and delineation of archaeological sites.
• Complete archaeological site forms, site sketches, profiles, logs, and related paperwork.
• Excavate shovel test pits, test units, trenches, or other required excavation.
• Identify and describe soil profiles, horizons, artifacts, and cultural features.
• Organize, process, and inventory artifacts.

Capabilities and Credentials

• Excellent written, oral, and computer skills.
• Professional discretion and judgment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Periodic travel required, including international travel.
• Ability to work at project locations remote from home for extended periods, with deployments that may recur within as little as three calendar days.
• Valid driver’s license with clean record.
• Drug screen required for position.

Education and Experience

• BA degree in Archaeology or Anthropology.
• Completion of an archaeological field school or a minimum of one year of professional archaeological experience (academic experience does not satisfy this requirement).
• Experience in Mid‑Atlantic archaeology preferred.
• Experience in Archaeological Survey.
• Experience completing archaeological forms and paperwork.
• Experience identifying soil horizons, cultural features, and artifacts.
• Experience organizing and inventorying data.

Physical Demands

• Frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing.
• Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May walk up to 15 miles a day on rough and uneven terrain and transport up to 35 pounds of gear.
• Periodic additional duties as directed.
