Job summary

ERM is seeking an Archaeological Field Technician to support survey efforts for projects located in Fresno, CA. This full-time limited-term role (six months, extendable) involves conducting field surveys and monitoring, with 40-60 hours per week.

You will walk long distances, perform shovel testing, document field notes, and coordinate with ERM staff and clients. Requires BA in Anthropology, 2+ years field experience, and willingness to travel across California; a valid driver's license is

Qualifications

• Requires BA in Anthropology or related; MA preferred.
• 2+ years of field experience in cultural resources management.
• Willingness to travel across Northern and Southern California and neighboring states.
• 1+ year of construction monitoring experience.
• Ability to identify and record precontact and historic resources.
• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123.
• Experience with shovel testing (STPs) and STUs.
• Archaeological field school or prior archaeological field survey experience.
• Able to work outdoors in variable weather and terrain.
• Mojave Desert or Great Basin experience preferred.
• Knowledge of archaeological survey and monitoring protocols.
• Able to work in the field for extended periods.
• Willingness to work in remote and/or rural areas.
• Able to work independently and as part of a crew.
• Valid driver’s license; off-road driving experience.
• Crew lead experience preferred.
• NPS/BLM Field Director qualification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Walk long distances up to 10 miles per day across varied terrain.
• Conduct archaeological monitoring during construction.
• Document newly recorded cultural resources and update existing ones.
• Maintain and submit accurate field notes.
• Coordinate with ERM staff, client, contractors, and subconsultants.
• Adhere to health and safety policies and project requirements.
• Conduct shovel testing and subsurface excavations; screen soils; perform other duties.
