Job summary

Advocate Health seeks a Medical Interpreter to provide confidential interpretation for patients and healthcare teams across settings. The role involves video/phone/in-person modalities and requires handling sensitive, high-stakes conversations with compassion and accuracy.

Applicants should be bilingual with medical terminology knowledge and ethics training; CMI certification must be obtained within one year. The position supports a 40-hour workweek with variable shifts and on-call rotation.

Qualifications

• Bilingual in English and the target language with medical interpreting proficiency.
• Proficient in medical terminology across anatomy, physiology, diagnostics, treatment and health education.
• Adheres to ethical standards per NCIHC guidelines and respected professional codes.
• Ability to work in high-stress clinical situations including sensitive communications.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpretation for patients, families and healthcare teams across clinical settings.
• Interpret for life support withdrawal, fetal demise and major emergency cases.
• Facilitate communication between patient and healthcare team to ensure clarity.
• Collaborate with social services, behavioral health, financial counseling and chaplaincy as needed.
• Document work activity and interpretation performed in patient records.
• Assist with referrals, transportation, insurance processes and informed consents when required.
• Adhere to all laws and regulations governing medical interpreting in healthcare.
