Position Summary

This position provides language interpretation services between patients, families and the healthcare team to ensure comprehension of cultural considerations during treatment planning.

Position Duties
  • Concurrently perform bilingual interpretation (English and foreign language) of patient care needs between patient, family, and health care team members to ensure understanding of needs, issues, and/or concerns.
  • Provide consecutive interpretation following national standards of practice and ethics.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of interpretation activities.
  • Participate in a variety of department and/or hospital-sponsored educational programs to maintain skills and competencies.
  • Work closely with translators by identifying documents, materials, and other written information, including, but not limited to, consents and discharge information requiring translation.
  • Refer identified psychosocial issues to social work, child life, pastoral care, or other family‑centered care departments to ensure appropriate and effective response to patient/family needs.
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as requested.
Position Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of a medical interpreter training course that is consistent with national standards.
  • Completion of Spanish Bilingual Assistant or equivalent training.
  • Experience: Six months of experience in a health care setting.
  • Special Skills: Experience interpreting in foreign languages as spoken and understood by patients and families served by the hospital.
  • Physical Requirements: The candidate must be able to perform tasks such as climbing (occasionally), fine motor skills (constant), hearing (constant), pushing/pulling (occasionally), reaching (occasionally), sitting (occasionally), standing (constant), stooping/crouching/kneeling/crawling (occasionally), talking (constant), walking (constant), near vision (constant), far vision (frequently), color discrimination (occasionally), use of keyboard/mouse/computer equipment (occasionally), lift up to 35 pounds without assistance (occasionally).
