Job summary

Buffalo Grove Park District is seeking a friendly Swim Instructor to deliver safe, engaging lessons for participants of all ages and abilities.

You will teach group and private sessions, reinforce water safety, and provide constructive feedback while maintaining a welcoming poolside environment.

This role requires reliability, communication with parents, and the ability to adapt to varying skill levels.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years of age.
• Previous swimming or swim instruction experience preferred.
• Strong swimming skills and knowledge of basic water safety.
• Ability to effectively communicate with children, adults, parents/guardians, and coworkers.
• Ability to work with participants of varying ages, abilities, and skill levels.
• Must be dependable, responsible, patient, and enthusiastic.

Responsibilities

• Teach group and private swim lessons according to Buffalo Grove Park District lesson plans, guidelines, and program expectations.
• Provide instruction appropriate to each participant’s age, ability, and swimming skill level.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and welcoming environment for all participants.
• Demonstrate and teach proper swimming techniques, water safety skills, and stroke development.
• Modify instruction and activities to meet the individual needs of participants.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with participants, parents/guardians, and other staff members.
• Provide appropriate feedback and encouragement to swimmers to help them progress.
• Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled lessons and complete all assigned responsibilities.
• Assist with maintaining an organized and clean teaching area and pool deck.
• Follow attendance, lesson documentation, and other program procedures as required.
• Report safety concerns, participant issues, or facility concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
• Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and in-service opportunities.
• Work cooperatively with other swim instructors, lifeguards, and aquatics staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Swim Instructor:

The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing safe, engaging, and effective swim instruction to participants of various ages and skill levels. Instructors will teach both group and private swim lessons, create a positive learning environment, and help swimmers develop confidence and proper swimming skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to swim and demonstrate swimming skills as needed.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move around the pool deck for extended periods.
• Ability to enter the water and assist participants when necessary.
• Ability to respond quickly to an emergency situation.
• Ability to lift or assist participants when necessary and as permitted by safety procedures.

Salary:
$17 - $30 per hour depending on qualifications.
