The Technician Apprentice is committed to working under the observation of a SHM Teammate, building basic skills, and taking on additional tasks and responsibilities as skills advance. They will learn to inspect, maintain, and repair boats of all kinds, using diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment. They will also install and test sanitation and refrigeration systems, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Surface preparation including stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking, and priming surfaces.
  2. Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of boats.
  3. Utilize hand and power tools such as scrapers, wire brushes, needle guns, grinders, pneumatic chippers, basic tools, and sandpaper.
  4. Understand varnish prepping, sealing, and the products used.
  5. Repair and fabricate composite parts.
  6. Match and spray gel coat.
  7. Interact with customers and respond to questions related to paint and varnish applications.
  8. Follow environmental and safety regulations in the application, removal, and disposal of paint and related waste, in accordance with OSHA and federal/state laws.
  9. Work overtime as needed to meet deadlines.
  10. Assign parts and purchases to appropriate vessels/tickets.

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  1. Follow SHM safety and environmental rules and complete related training.
  2. Wear proper personal protective equipment as required.
  3. Report all accidents, injuries, spills, and near misses immediately.

Technical and Physical Requirements

  1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  2. Technical school training preferred.
  3. ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred.
  4. Ability to ascend and descend ladders.
  5. Ability to work in confined spaces.
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  7. Knowledge of gas and diesel engines preferred.
