Job summary

Moderna’s Applied Technologies team offers a summer internship in Norwood, MA, from June 7, 2027 to August 20, 2027. You will work with engineers and scientists to design, develop, test, and implement automation solutions for laboratory workflows.

This hands-on role covers automation, robotics, software, data, and systems engineering; you will contribute to a defined project, gain experience with instruments and robotic platforms, and present findings to the team at the internship’s end.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree in an engineering, computer science, bioengineering, robotics, automation, life sciences, or related technical discipline.
• Demonstrated interest in applying engineering or digital technologies to scientific problems.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to document work clearly and communicate technical results.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to a defined automation, robotics, or systems engineering project under guidance.
• Support development, configuration, and testing of laboratory automation systems or related software.
• Assist with experimental execution, system characterization, troubleshooting, and data collection.
• Analyze test data and summarize findings to support engineering decisions.
• Develop or modify scripts, workflows, automation methods, or simple software tools.
• Prepare test plans, diagrams, work instructions, and project summaries.
• Participate in prototype development and evaluate improvements to system reliability, throughput, or scalability.
• Work with scientists, engineers, and automation specialists to understand user needs.
• Apply good engineering and documentation practices, including version control and structured testing.
• Present project progress and findings to the Applied Technologies team at internship end.
