Sustainability Science and Innovation (SSI) is a multidisciplinary team within WW Sustainability that combines science, analytics, economics, statistics, machine learning, product development, and engineering. We utilize this expertise to identify, develop, and evaluate scientific and innovative solutions to meet Amazon's and our partners' long-term sustainability goals.

We are seeking an Applied Scientist to join our AI and Sustainability team, which develops machine learning and AI-based tools and solutions to support sustainability efforts across Amazon, helping us accelerate progress toward our Climate Pledge commitments.

As an Applied Scientist, you will design, implement, and deploy state-of-the-art solutions, including AI models like LLMs, agents, copilots, RAGs, etc., at scale for sustainability and climate commitments. Your work may involve web-scale document extraction, environmental impact measurements, ESG reporting, supplier risk assessment, waste stream sortation, and lifecycle environmental impact of generative AI. You will ensure AI experiences align with our sustainability commitments and develop data-driven services to enhance sustainability efforts. Collaboration with scientists, subject matter experts, engineers, and external researchers will be key to solving complex sustainability challenges.

Key job responsibilities

1. Develop scalable machine-learning models and optimization strategies for business problems.
2. Research new AI and machine-learning models, creating comprehensive data foundations and scalable methods for sustainability challenges.
3. Collaborate with software engineers to deliver solutions into production.
4. Partner with sustainability SMEs (carbon, water, waste, ESG, social responsibility) and science teams to drive modeling and technical design for complex problems.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
• PhD or Master’s degree with 4+ years in CS, CE, ML, or related fields.
• Experience with patents or publications at top-tier conferences/journals.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
• Experience in algorithms, data structures, parsing, optimization, data mining, high-performance computing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience using Unix/Linux.
• Experience in professional software development.
