Sustainability Science and Innovation (SSI) is a multidisciplinary team within WWS that combines science, analytics, economics, statistics, machine learning, product development, and engineering to meet Amazon’s sustainability goals. We identify, develop, and evaluate innovative solutions to complex sustainability challenges.

Position: Applied Scientist

Join our AI and Sustainability team to develop machine learning and AI tools that support sustainability efforts across Amazon. Your work will include designing, implementing, and deploying state-of-the-art AI solutions such as LLM models, agents, copilots, RAGs, and more, at scale. Projects may involve web-scale document extraction, environmental impact measurement, ESG reporting, supplier risk assessment, waste stream identification, and assessing the environmental impact of generative AI.

You will collaborate with scientists, subject matter experts, engineers, and external researchers to develop technologies that address some of the most complex sustainability issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop scalable machine-learning models and optimization strategies for business problems.
• Research new AI models and develop comprehensive data foundations to solve sustainability challenges.
• Work closely with software engineers to deliver solutions into production.
• Partner with sustainability SMEs and technical teams to drive modeling and design for complex problems.

Minimum Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
• PhD or Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience in CS, CE, ML, or related fields.
• Experience with patents or publications in top-tier conferences or journals.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
• Experience in algorithms, data structures, parsing, optimization, data mining, or high-performance computing.
• Experience using Unix/Linux and professional software development.
