Job summary

Varsity Tutors is seeking Applied Mathematics tutors to join our online Live Learning Platform. As an independent contractor, you set your schedule, earn competitive rates up to $40/hour, and invoice for sessions from home.

You will work with advanced undergraduates and graduates, explaining differential equations, numerical methods, and modeling; use MATLAB and Python; adapt to each student’s learning style; and enjoy flexible hours, remote work, and fast payments twice per week.

Qualifications

What We Look For In a Applied Mathematics Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of differential equations, numerical methods, linear algebra applications, optimization, mathematical modeling, Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, and complex analysis. Ability to explain modeling techniques for physical systems, approximation methods, and stability analysis while preparing students for engineering, physics, finance, and computational science applications.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at breaking down mathematical model construction, numerical solution algorithms, and optimization procedures. Guides students through formulating real-world problems mathematically, implementing iterative solution methods, and interpreting computational results. Emphasizes bridging pure mathematics with practical applications, connecting theory to fluid dynamics, signal processing, and operations research contexts.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with applied mathematics curricula and common challenges such as translating physical problems into mathematical formulations, implementing numerical algorithms, and validating model accuracy. Adapts instruction using computational tools like MATLAB and Python, real-world case studies, and project-based learning to support advanced undergraduates and graduate students in STEM fields.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
